Assistant Director of Veterinary Services

Job Description:

SUMMARY:

The individual in this position has administrative oversight and clinical veterinary support responsibilities on the Brown University campus and provides on-call and back up assistance to the affiliated hospitals having research programs involving the care and use of laboratory animals. Its occupant (in consultation with the Director and Associate Director of Animal Care) participates in programs of veterinary care; provides surgical support; oversees veterinary technicians and the clinical veterinarian at Brown University; assists the institution in maintaining compliance with Public Health Service (PHS) and U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) regulations and guidelines; provides guidance in maintaining accreditation of animal care and use programs and facilities; advises/assists Principal Investigators in the design and performance of animal care and use protocols; provides training to researchers, animal care technicians and veterinary technicians and serves on the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committees at Brown University. 

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Must have a degree in veterinary medicine from an AVMA accredited school. 

• Must be licensed to practice veterinary medicine in at least one US state and must become licensed in the state of RI within six months from the date of hire. 

• Must be USDA accredited or able to obtain accreditation within six months from the date of hire. Must be able to sign international health certificates for animal exports. 

• Must have Formal Residency training and/or six years of experience in laboratory animal medicine. Board certification by the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM) is strongly preferred but board eligible candidates with appropriate work experience may be considered. 

• Must have excellent interpersonal communication, leadership and management skills. 

• The person in this position frequently communicates with faculty who have inquired about their research animals. Must be able to exchange accurate information in a professional manner using both verbal and written methods. 

• Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment and be able to handle multiple projects with shifting priorities and frequent, short deadlines. 

• Must be nimble and attention detailed in order to respond to greatly varying needs in multiple locations while maintaining cohesion of purpose and presentation. 

• Requires high level coordination with other leadership to help maintain the integrity of the total Brown University/Affiliated Hospital research effort utilizing animals. 

• Must be able to budget time and effort effectively. 

• This individual must work effectively with a number of people across the institution to foster and maintain high-quality animal care and use programs and facilities. 

• Possesses a willingness and ability to support a diverse and inclusive campus community
