Clinical Veterinarian - Office of Lab Animal Resources 15931 Description Clinical Veterinarian West Virginia University seeks a Clinical Veterinarian who will have a joint appointment in the Office of Laboratory Animal Resources (OLAR) (70%) and Davis College of Agriculture (30%) in Morgantown WV. OLAR provides animal care for all animals used in biomedical research at WVU. The Davis College of Agriculture has several farm operations in Morgantown and surrounding areas. The Morgantown farm has broiler and breeder chickens, over 200 sheep and 30 Hereford cows. There is a certified organic farm in Morgantown housing approximately 80 sheep. The Reedsville farm has primarily beef cattle composed of approximately 100 commercial cows. Additionally, this location is home to a newly established equine facility where WVU owns 8 horses and hosts outside events. West Virginia University is a land grant public institution with 303 undergraduate, graduate and professional programs and an enrollment of approximately 34,000 students including 6,200 professional and graduate students. The Robert C. Byrd Health Sciences Center includes the Schools of Medicine, Pharmacy, Dentistry, and Nursing, Hospitals, the Eye Center, and the Mary Babb Randolph Cancer Center. The HSC vivarium has recently been renovated and expanded and can accommodate a variety of species and experimental procedures. In addition, OLAR manages vivarium space at the Rockefeller Neuroscience Institute, Life Science Building, and Food Animal Research Facility. Representative species include rodents, rabbits, aquatics, birds and agricultural animals. Morgantown has a population of over 30,855 people and is consistently rated as one of the best small cities in the U.S., with affordable housing, excellent schools, a picturesque countryside, many outdoor recreational activities, and proximity to major cities, including Pittsburgh, PA and Washington, DC. The Clinical Veterinarian will help administer an animal care and use program that is in regulatory compliance and exceeds USDA, OLAW, and AAALAC standards. This position will work closely with the OLAR/Davis College veterinarians and veterinary technicians to provide state of the art veterinary care for research/teaching animals. This individual will provide veterinary coverage, including on-call/after hours care, for the veterinary care program (OLAR and Davis College) to include herd health, clinical/diagnostic treatments, internal medicine, and surgery to the biomedical research locations and farms in Morgantown, Reedsville, and occasionally other college farms at greater distance depending on needs. The Clinical Veterinarian will provide IACUC protocol advice to PIs and research staff and will provide clinical and surgical support for biomedical and agricultural studies as appropriate. The Clinical Veterinarian will share rotating on-call duties and provide back-up clinical care with other WVU veterinarians (covering both agricultural and biomedical animals) and will help develop and maintain written and/or computerized records, SOPs, and policies regarding veterinary care and health surveillance programs and for regulatory compliance purposes. Qualifications Successful applicants at a minimum will hold a DVM/VMD degree from an AVMA accredited program or equivalent, and two (2) years of experience working with domestic, farm, and/or laboratory species. The individual should have an interest in providing veterinary care for animals used in research and teaching in both a traditional agricultural and biomedical setting. Post-doctoral training in laboratory animal medicine, large animal medicine/surgery or equivalent experience is desired. Strong interpersonal, oral and written communication skills, and the ability to develop collegial relationships with researchers, farm/husbandry staff, students and stakeholders are essential to this position.
