General Summary/Purpose: Under the supervision of the Animal Facility Supervisor, individual will be responsible for the clinical care of laboratory animals housed within the Bunting-Blaustein and David Koch Research Buildings. Specific Duties & Responsibilities: - First responder to routine clinical calls from animal care technicians, research staff and veterinarians.
- Assess animal’s condition and determine if routine treatment is appropriate or if veterinary help is required.
- Follows clinical call standard operating procedures and clinical veterinarian’s treatment instructions.
- Provide follow-up treatment as needed and submit progress reports to veterinarians.
- Maintain accurate clinical records and close clinical cases as recommended by veterinarian.
- Provide training of rodent anesthesia techniques, including correct use of the rodent gas anesthesia machines, proper equipment and sterilization techniques.
- Provide rodent anesthesia services to research staff.
- Provide training and performing rodent techniques as requested by the veterinarian, including restraint, IM, IV, IP and SQ injections, blood and tissue collection and rodent surgery techniques.
- Maintain immune compromised breeding colony to include breeding records, identification and weaning.
- Provide research support to investigators (i.e. colony management, sample collection, training).
- Perform other duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications (mandatory): - High school degree/GED required.
- 1 year related experience.
- Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula***.
- Must achieve Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) certification from the American Association of Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) within fifteen months of employment.
Preferred Qualifications: - Two (2) year of laboratory animal care or related experience including breeding of laboratory mice and performing rodent handling procedures.
- Experience working in an ABSL3 animal facility.
Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: - Knowledge of basic animal husbandry and research techniques.
- Knowledge of basic scientific terminology, basic conversion calculations and basic measuring devices.
- Knowledge of principles of asepsis, disease control and prevention, barrier and isolation animal housing.
- Knowledge of general breeding and mating systems.
- Knowledge of current regulations, policies and principles for the care and use of laboratory animals.
- Ability to handle, restrain and determine the sex of laboratory animals without causing injury or harm to animal, self, and others.
- Ability to understand and follow detailed oral and written instructions.
- Ability to read and write in order to maintain records, read instructions, labels, etc.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule including weekends and holidays.
- Ability to interact and work with faculty, students, staff, and visitors in a knowledgeable, respectful and courteous manner.
- Ability to discuss animal related projects with investigators and report these discussions to the supervisor.
Any Specific Physical Requirements for the Job: - Ability to work under environmental conditions that require the use of safety equipment.
- Ability to lift, carry or otherwise move and position objects and materials weighing up to 50 lbs.
