Sr Animal Caretaker (Stratford)

Summary:

Responsible for the daily feeding, cleaning and observation of research animals in support of the laboratory animal husbandry program. Cleans and disinfects cages, rooms and equipment. Supports veterinary staff and researchers with handling and restraint of animals and administration of treatments.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:  Include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

• Documents census and general health observations to ensure proper animal health, welfare, and environmental conditions.
• Monitors and documents environmental parameters of the vivarium.
• Conducts inventory checks including feed, bedding and pharmaceuticals.
• Receives animal and feed/bedding shipments.
• Assists Veterinary Staff with the handling, restraint, and treatment of research animals.
• Cleans and sanitizes cages, related equipment, and animal holding rooms.
• Assists Supervisor and Veterinary Staff with diagnostic and technical procedures.
• Assists investigators with handling, restraint, and technical procedures such as maintaining breeding colonies, transgenic research and/or biohazard research studies.
• Attends continuing education meetings. Obtains ALAT certification within 12 months of hire date.
• Performs other related duties as required.
• This position requires mandatory weekend and some weekday hours plus the availability to cover holidays and emergencies.  This position is listed as “essential personnel”

Qualifications:

To perform this job successfully, the individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required. Must be able to lift 50 pounds.

Education and/or Experience:

One year of experience as an animal care or veterinary technician, or Associates Degree in Animal Science or related field. AALAS certification is preferred at the time of hire, but not required.
