Veterinary Internship Nonhuman Primate Medicine & Management

The Mannheimer Foundation, Inc. invites applications from veterinary graduates for our one-year clinical internship program in the medicine and management of nonhuman primates. Established more than 10 years ago, our educational program includes:

1. Practical training in nonhuman primate clinical medicine and pathology, primarily focused in macaques and baboons.

2. Formal coursework: lectures include laws and ethics, taxonomy, clinical techniques and therapeutics, diseases by body system, nutrition, behavior and colony management, facility operations and administration, as well as animal models and research techniques.

3. Research experience: interns are involved in research support activities and mentored through an intern-driven project intended to lead to first author publication.

The foundation is an AAALAC accredited institution with 2 sites, the main facility located in Homestead, just South of Miami, and a satellite facility (Haman Ranch) located 35 miles East of Ft. Myers and 60 miles West of Palm Beach, Florida. Animals at both facilities are housed outdoors year-round in social groups, and in a variety of innovative cage designs. Between our 2 sites, the Foundation houses nearly 4,000 nonhuman primates (including Rhesus and cynomolgus macaques, as well as Hamadryas baboons).

The successful candidate will rotate through both locations, and join a strong team of clinical veterinarians and veterinary assistants who provide veterinary medical care for our breeding colonies. This includes animal health surveillance, surgery, research support, colony management, enrichment and participation in IACUC activities.
