Position Summary

The Wan lab at Columbia University Medical Center is seeking a Chief Technician to study the molecular mechanisms and cellular electrophysiology of cardiac arrhythmias such as atrial fibrillation and ventricular tachycardia.

Responsibilities

• Assist scientists in the performance of laboratory and investigative procedures by performing a variety of routine experimental techniques such as Western blots, mouse genotyping, PCR, centrifugation, and the like.
• Collect, verify, record, and compile data and information in support of research.
• Assist scientists by performing various investigative procedures and operating a variety of instruments and other scientific equipment and be able to handle complex assignments, carry out detailed observations and manipulations.
• Collect, record, organize and verify the accuracy of data; perform calculations and prepare charts, graphs and reports.
• Use software applications to assemble, manipulate and/or format data and test reports.
• Configure and operate laboratory apparatus and instruments; read and record instrument data; tabulate data; keep laboratory records.
• Order chemicals, reagents, and other laboratory supplies.
• Participate in laboratory meetings and planning sessions.
• Assist in maintaining mouse colony for experimental purposes.
• Read literature applicable to research areas as required.
• Able to research literature in applicable field and present results.
• Perform other responsibilities as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in biology or relevant field of technology or science and 3 years of related laboratory experience or equivalent in education, training and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

• Master's degree preferred.
• Generally experienced in job duties and in the principles and practices associated with those duties with an understanding of the underlying scientific principles.
• Ability to draft routine reports and keep accurate records of work performed.
• Actively seeks opportunities to increase skills and expertise.
• Able to learn complex tasks with general instruction.
• Able to use experience to perform a variety of new techniques.

Other Requirements

• The candidate selected for this position is required to undergo a drug screening test prior to a final offer of employment being made.
• Position will involve work with laboratory animals.
• Participation in the medical surveillance program.
• Participation in animal studies.
• Must successfully complete systems training requirements.
