Other duties will include teaching and supervision of trainees and students, and scholarly activity.
We especially welcome applicants with ACLAM board certification or those preparing for the ACLAM board certification examination. Academic rank and compensation (including a generous package of fringe benefits) are dependent upon qualifications.
The Animal Resources Center (ARC) at The University of Chicago oversees the care and use of all research animals on campus. It is responsible for the clinical veterinary care of over a dozen different species housed in 138,000 square feet of centrally managed research facilities. The ARC with the Department of Surgery, is home to The University of Chicago Laboratory Animal Medicine Training Program, a 3-year ACLAM recognized residency program intended for veterinarians who want to pursue a career in the laboratory animal medicine. As part of the ARC training program, clinical veterinarians also train veterinary technicians, and students through a variety of externship experiences. The ARC has a robust rodent research program which includes ASBL2 and ABSL3 containment facilities. Our facilities are designed and constructed to exclude adventitious infectious agents from areas where defined health status animals are housed. Highly trained staff support these facilities, including a Special Services Technician Program composed of a group of elite animal care technicians who offer technical research support to investigators outside of routine animal care. Investigator research comprises a diverse spectrum of biomedical research including immunology, oncology, infectious disease, behavior, and diabetes. The ARC's large animal program includes non-human primates, pigs, dogs, opossums, and a variety of other USDA covered species. The large animal program has up to date imaging modalities such as CT, MRI, and ultrasound and strives to use the most recent advances in multimodal anesthesia and analgesia for diagnostic and research use. Veterinarians are an integral part of the ongoing surgical research, which involves neurological implants and cardiovascular work. The ARC also includes one of the leading germ-free and gnotobiotic programs in the country, the Gnotobiotic Research Animal Facility (GRAF). The GRAF is a highly specialized unit that houses germ free (free of all non-self- organisms such as bacteria, virus, and parasites) mice and mice that have been selectively associated with specific organisms. These animals are utilized in multidisciplinary animal models supporting research objectives not only within the Basic Sciences Division but also in support of collaborative studies across the other divisions of The University of Chicago. The ARC supports this type of research with highly skilled, specially trained staff who provide all care and experimental procedures. The ARC team works closely with the IACUC on assuring animal welfare and application of the 3Rs. Recent efforts have focused on elimination of sentinel animals through the use of the exhaust air dust health monitoring for rodents and introducing the use of tunnel handling for mice.
Prior to the start of employment, qualified applicants must: 1) have a DVM or VMD from an AVMA accredited institution, 2) hold or be eligible for veterinary licensure in the State of Illinois, and 3) hold ACLAM Board certification or have completed training in laboratory animal medicine or be preparing for the ACLAM board certification examination.
