Associate Director of Comparative Medicine and Veterinary Resources (03-313-152) - (22000076) The Associate Director of Comparative Medicine and Veterinary Resources serves as the chief clinical veterinarian for University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) and reports to the Director of Comparative Medicine and Veterinary Resources. The successful candidate will manage the veterinary care program, maintain animal health surveillance programs, may serve as a voting member of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee or other regulatory committee, and help to develop and refine animal care and use programs. The Associate Director will also assist with the education and training of animal care personnel, laboratory technicians and investigators. The successful candidate will be eligible for a faculty appointment within the University of Maryland School of Medicine in a discipline commensurate with education and experience. Essential Functions: - Provide clinical veterinary care in support of the institution's biomedical animal research mission.
- Lead and direct the veterinary care, preventive medicine, and rodent health-monitoring program.
- Facilitate the advancement and growth of the anesthesia and surgical support functions of the Veterinary Resources Program.
- Engage with key support entities of the institution, including Facilities Services, Environmental Health & Safety, occupational health services, compliance personnel, etc. to assure appropriate compliance, operations, and safety for the Comparative Medicine and Veterinary Resources Program.
- May serve as a voting member of the IACUC and other regulatory, and non-regulatory committees.
- Serve in an advisory role to university research scientists in areas of model development, technical training, and problem solving.
- Assist in leadership of animal care program, including a strong working relationship with the program's operation and management team.
- Assist in training programs associated with the institution's animal care and use program, including Comparative Medicine and Veterinary Resources Program training and IACUC training.
- Rotate in after-hours, weekend, and holiday on-call services.
- Assist the Director in overall guidance and leadership of the program, including personnel and budgetary management, short- and long-term planning, and interactions with accrediting and regulatory bodies. Serve as Acting Director in the Director's absence.
- Provide overall leadership and direction to staff, which include Veterinarians, Veterinary Technicians, and Husbandry Staff (Management, Supervisors, and Technicians). Set expectations & focus, assign duties, delegate responsibilities, evaluate activities, prepare performance appraisals & professional development plans.
- Identify strategic goals based upon regular program assessment, developing plans consistent with current and emerging research needs at UMB, and implementing actions necessary to achieve these goals as well as continuous program improvement
- Ensure animal care is implemented in a manner that meets the high standards required for accreditation by AAALAC (the Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care) and compliance with state and federal regulations.
- Work in collaboration with the IACUC and IACUC staff to ensure regulatory matters are addressed, and that animal welfare and research facilitation are balanced with efficient daily operations and long-range academic and facility needs.
- Provide advice to campus animal facility management, animal users, and administration regarding current standards for research and animal care.
- Perform other incidental duties as noted by the director and/or Institutional Official.
Qualifications Education & Experience: - Licensed DVM/VMD
- Board certification by the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine
- Must be currently licensed to practice veterinary medicine in a state or territory of the United States.
- 3-5 years of progressive leadership (e.g. Senior Veterinarian, Assistant- or Associate- Director level) experience in a major research laboratory animal facility.
- Up to date knowledge of laboratory animal medicine and science, as well as research processes.
- In-depth knowledge of state and federal regulations and AAALAC accreditation standards.
- Knowledge of appropriate equipment, facilities and operations required to accomplish a wide array of activities related to animal housing and research, including the use of biological and chemical hazards in an animal research setting.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Demonstrated leadership ability.
- Must be able to advise, counsel and train investigators in appropriate animal procedures with the aim of humane animal care.
- Ability to influence; build relationships; foster collaboration; acquire and develop talent; and inspire to achieve shared objectives.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: - Strong communication skills, demonstrated leadership qualities, teaching and mentoring capabilities, problem solving skills, and engagement with a diverse scientific mission are essential skills required for the role.
