The University of Maryland, Baltimore School of Medicine Shock, Trauma and Anesthesiology Research Center (STAR/Trauma Research) is seeking a Laboratory Animal Research Assistant . This position is responsible for performing animal research activities such as small animal surgery and animal clinical care. The Laboratory Animal Research Assistant primarily performs advanced laboratory research activities on animals such as: independently performing rodent surgery to include administration of anesthetics and analgesics, cannulation of blood vessels, and removal of blood to induce hemorrhage, obtaining blood and tissue samples, post-operative care, implantation or placement of medical devices, administration of pharmaceuticals and nutrients, and perform euthanasia process. This is a full time contractual position.
Work is performed in accordance with animal welfare regulations, USDA, the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, Public Health Services (PHS), Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare (OLAW), Association for assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care (AAALAC), and Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) guidelines.

Essential Functions :
- Perform routine laboratory maintenance and research activities such as: general housekeeping, daily observations of animal health, collection of cultures and biological specimens for diagnostic testing and monitoring of animal health; diagnostic molecular (ELISA), bacteriological, or biological assays, breeding colonization processes, irradiation of blood products, and executing biochemical procedures such as: electrophoresis, blotting, chromatography, and DNA extractions, etc.
- May assist the PI and other research personnel in the development of research protocols and materials by providing study analysis and forming conclusions and recommendations. May assist in developing and recommending policies and procedures and/or design methods for laboratory research activities.
- Compile and analyze research data using various relevant computer software applications.
- Assist with literature research, editing and preparing manuscripts, scientific illustrations and computer graphics for publication.
- May perform administrative duties such as training and guiding students and/or other laboratory technicians and ordering supplies.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education: Bachelor's degree in biology, agriculture, veterinary science, biochemistry, chemistry or field of study related to the animal science.
Preferred Certification/Licensure: Certified Veterinary Technician (CVT) or Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT).
Other: May consider a combination of directly related experience and education.
* Bachelor's degree in an unrelated field with at least 18 credits in a field related to the research of the clinic or laboratory, as appropriate, or Bachelor's degree in unrelated field with at least one year of experience in a field directly related to the research of the clinic or laboratory, as appropriate. Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience .
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Able to perform position in compliance with all requirements, regulations, and laws. Ability to understand and utilize scientific/medical terminology and research theory in both verbal and written communications. Skill in basic statistical interpretation and data analysis using statistical software as well as spreadsheet and database software applications.
Skill in animal husbandry, care, and handling with rodents. Skill in performing animal surgery.
Ability to maintain high standards with the work being performed and maintain awareness with trends and influences. Assumes personal responsibility for all outcomes; makes effective and timely decisions; and learns how to effectively use technology. Maintains productivity and uses knowledge strategies to increase knowledge base. Ability to use measurable and verifiable information for making decisions or judgments.
Ability to effectively communicate both verbal and written thoughts, ideas, and facts. Interprets and understands written information and is able to listen attentively to verbal and non-verbal cues that lead to a deeper understanding.
Ability to work cooperatively with others and demonstrates professional, ethical, respectful, and courteous behavior when interacting with others. Capable of interacting pleasantly and positively with other to meet customer expectations, and provide follow up with customers.
Hiring Range: Low to high $40,000s; commensurate with education and experience.
