The Department of Comparative Medicine provides for the health and welfare needs, care, and housing of research animals throughout the OHSU central and waterfront campuses, and supports research innovations of OHSU Investigators

The Laboratory Animal Technician 1 provides for the basic health and husbandry needs of a large variety of laboratory research animals. The Lab Animal Technician works as a member of a highly interdependent team using a professional approach in providing direct animal care. The technician is most often the first line of defense in spotting health and environmental problems. This is the first level of a three level series. It is distinguished from the Laboratory Animal Technician 2 & 3 by requiring close supervision, intensified training and a lower level of independent decision making skills

Experience: Must have at least 6 months of direct work related experience with animals, OR Certification at the Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician level (ALAT), OR 2 years of indirect laboratory animal experience.

Job Related Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (Competencies): Ability to follow detailed verbal and written instructions. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others. Skill in making careful visual observations. Skill in communicating verbally and in writing.Skill in performing basic arithmetical calculations. Skill in handling, restraint, identification and sexing common varieties of laboratory animals. Skill in keeping accurate records. Skill in driving motor vehicles.

Registrations, Certifications and/or Licenses: Possess and maintain a valid Oregon or Washington drivers license.

Compliance: Code of conduct, Respect in the workplace, Applicable policies, procedures and agreements related to position, department or OHSU as a whole.

Working Conditions: Work is located within a functioning vivarium. May be required to handle animals that have the potential to bite, scratch or harbor zoonotic diseases. Occupational exposure to allergens, chemicals, biological pathogens and radioactive material. This position would require travel between and Central and Waterfront Campuses potentially involving travel via the Tra m.

Physical Demands and Equipment Usage: Sufficient physical strength, agility and mobility to move cages of varying sizes, shapes and weights through corridors and elevators. Sufficient physical strength, agility and mobility to move objects of up to 10 lbs. repeatedly while bending, twisting and lifting. Sufficient physical strength to lift objects of 50 lbs. Ability to operate some equipment, such as cage washers and autoclaves. Ability to stand for long periods of time. Able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without accommodation
