DESCRIPTION
Under supervision, the Lab Research Assistant will assist the Principal Investigator in performing experiments using standard biological techniques including isolation of DNA/RNA/protein, DNA cloning, and gel electrophoresis.
Incumbent will assist with preparing immunofluroescnece staining and prepare media, buffers and solution while recording experimental data. In addition, the Lab Research Assistant will assist in performing mouse injection and obtaining tissue samples. Incumbent will organize and maintain the lab working areas and equipment, serve as lab radiation and bio safety coordinator and will also contribute to lab management by ordering lab supplies, maintaining purchasing records and re-stocking. Incumbent will work with other lab members on established lab protocols as needed and provided training to undergraduate research assistants.
QUALIFICATIONS
Graduation from high school or a GED and two (2) years of laboratory experience OR two (2) years of college including courses in biochemistry, molecular biology, or genetics and one (1) year of relative laboratory experience, OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Experience in working with mice, small animal surgery and comfortable with the use of mice as experimental animals.
Practical knowledge and experience in standard molecular biology procedures including but not limited to sterile technique, PCR, mouse genotyping.
Skill and demonstrated ability to operate standard laboratory equipment, including flow cytometer, centrifuges, balances, pH meters.
Excellent interpersonal skills including tact, diplomacy, and flexibility with the ability and experience to work in a team framework in conjunction with principles of community with staff, faculty, and students. Participate and contribute to discussions regarding procedures and goals of department.
Prior experience and knowledge of proper handling, storage and disposal of chemicals, biochemicals, hazardous chemicals and biohazardous materials including radioactive materials.
Experience in sterile technique as applied to the propagation of prokaryotic and mammalian cells.
Experience using Apple, PC computers and associated word processing and spreadsheet software with a willingness and ability to update and increase skills and knowledge as needed.
Proven ability to hire and direct the work of undergraduate student lab employees. Skill to train others in varous lab techniques and procedures (safety precautions, preparation of media, dishwashing, equipment usage, laboratory maintenance, etc.).
Familiar with laws and regulations that govern the housing and management of laboratory animals. Sensitivity to the needs of caged laboratory animals in compliance with AAALAC standards.
Knowledge of flow cytometry (including cell staining and data analysis).
SPECIAL CONDITIONS
Must be willing to work with mice and comfortable with the use of mice as experimental animals.
Must be willing and able to work safely with viral and bacterial preparations.
Overtime and flexible work schedule required. Must be willing to work weekends as needed.
Must be able to work on feet all day.
Must be willing and able to safely lift mouse cages.
