Position Summary
The Research Technician II will be a team member of the Zebrafish Consortium staff and will receive general duties, responsibilities and training from the Zebrafish Consortium Supervisor. The technician will assist and support other team members in maintaining superior micro and macro environments for the researchers and laboratory animals alike. Responsibilities will include working independently and weekend and holiday hours.
Job Description
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Following standard Zebrafish Consortium operating procedures, assists with the following duties that include but are not limited to the following:
- Maintain detailed records of equipment functionality and water quality parameters.
- Hand feed zebrafish in satellite facilities.
- Perform daily health surveillance of individual aquaria.
- Stock larvae zebrafish.
- Harvest and maintain saltwater rotifers.
- Exchange soiled tanks and components as needed.
- Set up daily wild type crosses.
- Refill and clean food bottles on automated feeders.
Provide superior micro and macro environments of the wet and dry phases of the laboratory spaces:
- Perform general housekeeping and cleanliness.
- Keep community supplies in stock.
- Prepare media and other stock solutions. â‹
Maintain close relationship with other team members and research scientists to ensure overall research and husbandry goals are obtained:
- Support other team members in daily husbandry routines (especially when someone is absent).
- Complete research services requests.
- Answer questions and provide technical assistance to researchers.
- Report equipment failures to supervisor.
- Report protocol noncompliances to supervisor.
Working Conditions
This is a wet and tropical-like laboratory environment with potential exposure to biological, chemical, and mechanical hazards. The floors are wet and caution must be used at all times. The individual must be physically able to wear protective equipment and to provide standard care to research animals. The worker must be physically able to move heavy containers of salt, sodium bicarbonate, fish food, detergent barrels, and mobile liquid nitrogen dewars.
Preferred Qualifications
- Demonstrated familiarity of standard laboratory policies, procedures, and equipment regarding the maintenance of zebrafish and aquatic equipment.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and communicate with laboratory staff and investigators.
- Ability to maintain complete and organized records.
- Working knowledge of computer software and general lab equipment.
Required Qualifications
Bachelorâ™s degree and up to one year of experience in a laboratory setting or an equivalent combination of education and experience equaling four years.

Salary Range
$15.61 - $24.39 / Hourly
The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
