Summary of Duties:The Assistant Director - Clinical Veterinarian will help develop, manage and provide day-to-day administration of veterinary care to University-owned animals for the Office of the Campus Veterinarian at the Washington State University (WSU) Spokane campus. Responsibilities include regularly exercising independent judgment and discretion in work directly related to providing adequate veterinary care and oversight to animals used in research, teaching and testing at WSU as mandated by federal law, regulations, accreditation standards and university policy as set by the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC).
This position will have responsibility for planning, organizing, and managing all operations of the WSU animal housing facilities placed under the centralized management of the Program of Laboratory Animal Resources (PLAR). This includes supervising area managers/supervisors/staff employed in the caring for animals within those facilities. This position will have substantial responsibility for directing or controlling the animal resources operations. Must regularly exercise independent judgment and discretion in work directly related to management, business and animal care standards and policies. The individual filling this position should have exceptional management, organizational and interpersonal skills. This position will have delegated authority to make commitments that affect the vivarium services unit in Spokane. Personal attributes would include having strong written and oral communication skills, demonstrated ability to work professionally and courteously with animal care and research staff, and the capacity to foster a strong sense of teamwork.
Required Qualifications:- Positions require a Bachelor's degree in a relevant field and four (4) years of progressively responsible relevant experience, which has included at least one (1) year of managerial experience. A Master's degree in a related field may be substituted for up to one (1) year of the required experience. Education and experience can be tailored to fit the specific organizational entity/directorial assignment. Positions may require applicable licensure and/or certification.
- DVM (Doctorate of veterinary medicine) or VMD (Veterinary Medicine Doctorate) degree is required.
- License to practice veterinary medicine in the State of Washington or eligibility to be licensed within 6 months of hire.
- Category II Accreditation from the National Veterinary Accreditation Program of the USDA or eligibility to be accredited within 6 months of hire.
- Eligibility to acquire DEA and Washington State Board of Pharmacy license within 6 months of hire.
- Two years (2) of experience directly related to small animal, exotic, zoological or laboratory animal medicine and clinical care.
- Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate in English (both written and spoken), work collegially, and collaborate with diverse internal and external constituencies.
- Demonstrated computer software skills, including the ability to use Microsoft Office programs, such as: Outlook, Word, Excel, Zoom, Teams, and other platforms.
- Demonstrated experience interpreting and applying laws, rules, policies and procedures. Exceptional management and organizational skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work professionally and courteously with a diverse work setting.
- Possession of, or ability to obtain by time of hire, a valid driver's license.
- Ability to pass a criminal background check.
- Ability to travel periodically for continuing education or work purposes.
- This position will be required to be on-call on a rotating basis to provide emergency veterinary care for after-hours to include weekends and holidays. This is an essential position, and the employee will be expected to report to work under conditions that other employees are not required to report to work, such as inclement weather and WSU suspended operations.
- Physical ability to do required work, including lifting up to 50 pounds and carrying 30 pounds and prolonged periods of repetitive work, standing, reaching and bending.
- Must be able to wear personnel protective equipment including respiratory protection if necessary, based on research needs, occupational health and safety requirements, and requirements.
Preferred Qualifications:- Experience in an animal research or laboratory setting and knowledge of the policies in The Animal Welfare Act and The Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, as well as knowledge regarding regulatory agencies such as the USDA and OLAW.
- Certification with the American Association of Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) (CMAR, ILAM, LATg, LAT).
- Veterinary specialty board certification or eligibility (ACLAM, ACZM, ACVS, ACVIM, ACVP).
- Experience with centralized animal facility management.
- Experience in supervising personnel and the ability to mentor, coach, and manage competencies of a diverse staff.
- Experience in strategic planning, formulation, design, implementation and tracking.
- Experience creating/auditing administrative procedures and internal controls.
