Position Summary:
ULAR (University Laboratory Animal Resources) is an AAALACi-accredited animal care program that supports the University of California Irvine's research and teaching missions by providing high quality, humane care for vertebrate laboratory animals, in accordance with State and Federal laws and regulations pertaining to the use of animals in research and teaching.
Evaluates and treats laboratory animals in support of UC Irvine's research and teaching missions and in accordance with applicable animal welfare regulations and accreditation standards. Independently performs the full range of Clinical Veterinarian duties for laboratory animals at UC Irvine. May receive supervision or guidance for difficult or complex cases. Ensures activities adhere to animal use protocols. Provides advice and assessment to UC Irvine's Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC). Performs anesthesia and surgical procedures, including pre-operative and post-operative care. Advises and trains research personnel on the choice and use of anesthetics, analgesics, sedatives, tranquilizers, other medications, aseptic technique, surgical procedures, post-operative care, animal handling, animal husbandry, and other procedures related to animal research. Responds to routine and emergency requests for veterinary care, including on-call duty on nights, weekends, and holidays.

At least 2 years of experience as a laboratory animal veterinarian required. D.V.M. / V.M.D. or equivalent veterinary degree from an accredited college of Veterinary Medicine. Must obtain license to practice veterinary medicine within California within 6 months of employment. Current license to practice veterinary medicine in the State of California (preferred). Requires thorough knowledge associated with conducting examinations, prescribing, and administering treatments, and advising owners and handlers. Proficient clinical skills. Must be able to communicate with researchers and staff members regarding broad range of clinical care issues. Demonstrates interpersonal and oral communication skills to interact with all personnel. Must be able to work in a collaborative manner. Must be able to diagnose animal conditions and determine appropriate treatment. Demonstrates in depth knowledge of standard veterinary and diagnostic instrumentation. Must be able to influence others. Skill to give written and oral presentations at conferences and specialty meetings. Broad knowledge of institutional and government guidelines and rules governing care and housing of animals. Requires knowledge of electronic / medical records systems. Must be computer literate.
Preferred:
At least 1 year of experience with swine and ruminant research models, including anesthesia and surgery. Board-certified or board-eligible by American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM).
Special Conditions Required:
Must be available to respond to routine and emergency requests for veterinary care, including on-call duty on nights, weekends, and holidays. Must carry a cell phone when on call; must be able to respond to emergency calls by phone within 15 minutes; must be able to report to UCI premises within one hour when on call. Able to work a flexible schedule as needed based on workload and deadlines. Must have a current California driver license. Fingerprinting and background check are required as a condition of employment. Must participate in medical monitoring programs as prescribed by the UCI Occupational Health and Safety Program. This may include preventive medical programs such as TB screening, tetanus booster, other immunizations, blood testing, respirator fit testing. Must comply with the University's public health requirements.
