Job Summary: The Department of Comparative Medicine (DCM) in the College of Medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) is seeking a clinical veterinarian eligible for a tenure-track faculty rank of Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor. The Division of Laboratory Animal Resources (DLAR) within the DCM is responsible for the care and use of all laboratory animals at MUSC. The successful candidate will have an interest and experience in creation of surgical models. Board certification by the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine is preferred, but board-eligible candidates will be considered. A SC license to practice veterinary medicine and USDA accreditation must be obtained within one year of employment. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications.

The clinical veterinarian will work in tandem with other veterinarian faculty in the department to support a collaborative research environment in a well-established, AAALAC-accredited program. Investigator research primarily utilizes rodents and swine across a diverse spectrum of biomedical research including immunology, oncology, neuroscience, and gnotobiotic models. Veterinarians are an integral part of ongoing surgical research, in fields as varied as orthopedics, neurosurgery, and cardiovascular remodeling.

The ideal candidate will have a strong commitment to animal welfare, promotion and transparency of biomedical research, and will be actively engaged with department personnel and investigators. The candidate will be expected to demonstrate and model strong collaborative skills across sites and teams, and will directly contribute to team success. Additionally, the ideal candidate will have experience working independently on clinical veterinary cases and be able to assist with training staff on the veterinary care and husbandry of research animals as mandated by federal law and regulations, accreditation standards, and policies as set by the MUSC Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee.

 Clinical Care:

Provide preventative, clinical, diagnostic, and surgical support and services to rodent and large research animals. Requires daily rounding in the animal facilities; physical examinations of incoming and resident animals; and comprehensive documentation of animal care and use activities in accordance with applicable regulations, accreditation standards, and industry best practices.

 Teaching and Training:

 Engage in ongoing consultation and training with investigators, lab personnel, DLAR staff, and other DLAR veterinarians to facilitate animal model and IACUC protocol development; optimal animal care and outcomes; and a broad knowledge base among the animal care and use community at MUSC. Serve as subject matter expert on topics to include basic handling, sample collection, and euthanasia techniques; selection of anesthetics and analgesics based on species, procedure, and research goals; surgical approaches with a focus on minimizing pain and distress; and specialty areas like gnotobiotics, immunocompromised models, and Animal Biosafety Level 2 environments.

 Deliver lectures and conduct wet lab exercises in support of the DCM academic mission.

 Collaborative Research:

 Work with internal and external researchers on funded projects and activities. Conduct research activities as contracted with DLAR and through individual collaborations as principal investigator or key personnel.

 Compliance:

 Serve as a veterinarian member of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee. Review submitted protocols and amendments as a veterinary subject matter expert. Participate in scheduled and ad hoc meetings; discussions and consultations relating to protocol concerns; and semiannual and ad hoc inspections of animal facilities and investigator laboratories.

Assist with preparation for and conduct of triennial AAALAC, International site visits.

Conduct post-approval monitoring activities. Evaluate, document, and report through appropriate channels instances of adverse events or potential non-compliance.

 Other Duties:

 Participate in continuing education activities like conferences, webinars, and ongoing literature searches to maintain and disseminate up-to-date knowledge of industry trends and best practices.

Personnel oversight duties commensurate with experience, and may include direct supervision of employees, scheduling, personnel actions (hiring, promotions, raises), discipline, staff development, and performance monitoring.

Share after-hours and holiday emergency on-call services with other veterinary staff on a rotating basis.

Serve on other campus committees as assigned.
