Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) Quality Improvement & Compliance Auditor - (220000KR) The University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) Office of Animal Welfare Assurance has an opportunity for an Animal Care and Use Quality Improvement & Compliance Auditor. The Office of Animal Welfare Assurance (OAWA) is the regulatory oversight office for the UMB Animal Care and Use Program, and provides support for the UMB Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC). The selected candidate will monitor regulatory compliance, conduct audits, analyze data from audits and protocols, and communicate audit findings to the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), Animal Care and Use Program (ACUP) Leadership, and other UMB regulatory offices, as applicable. Additionally, this position will review animal use protocol progress reports and recommend protocols for enhanced post approval monitoring (PAM). Monitor regulatory compliance of University research, researchers, and research staff to ensure all animal research activities are being conducted in accordance with Institutional policies, ethical principles and government regulations. -
Plans, organizes and conducts audits, reviews, investigations, and analytical studies of animal research for compliance with approved protocols, internal SOPs and regulatory requirements. In so doing, individual analyzes and interprets a variety of documentation for compliance to procedures. -
Analyze data from audits and protocols, prepare reports, and communicate audit findings to the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), Animal Care and Use Program (ACUP) Leadership, and other UMB regulatory offices, as applicable. -
Communicate IACUC determinations and audit results with suggested corrective actions to the research teams. Ensure follow-up through completion and closure of audit reports. -
Maintain post-approval monitoring databases to store accurate and comprehensive records of research activities in compliance with OAWA SOPs and regulatory requirements/expectations; tracking and closure of audit corrective/preventive actions; and tracking of program related metrics. -
Conduct review of animal use protocol progress reports to ensure investigator compliance with IACUC approved protocols. Facilitate communication during these reviews, maintain accurate and complete documentation of these reviews, and close out the review on behalf of the IACUC. Utilize this process as a risk assessment to recommend protocols for enhanced post-approval monitoring (PAM). -
Provide subject matter expertise to researchers in protocol development/submissions/amendments, regulatory documentation, regulatory expectations and best practices, and reporting requirements. -
Assist in the ongoing development and implementation of an internal quality management program to facilitate Institutional compliance with research requirements, identify areas of risk, and implement corrective action plans. -
Assist in the development and implementation of post approval monitoring (PAM) educational programs. -
Research and remain abreast of federal, state, and local laws as well as University policy to identify changes regarding statutes and rulings that might affect research projects and compliance. Work in tandem with the UMB ACUP Leadership to notify researchers of changes and devise strategies to successfully implement required updates. -
Participate in IACUC semi-annual inspections and generate report of findings and corrective actions required for resolution. -
Perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications Education: Bachelor's in related field. Experience: Four (4) years of experience in animal care administration, research, or other animal welfare protection related experience. Certification/Licensure: Certified Professional in IACUC Administration (CPIA), Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT) or Laboratory Animal Technologist (LATG) preferred. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of position requirements. Knowledge of all applicable requirements, regulations, and laws. Skill in effective use of applicable technology/systems. Ability to effectively communicate both verbal and written thoughts, ideas, and facts. Ability to work cooperatively with others and independently.
