Under the general supervision of Dr. Barry Stripp, the incumbent will provide technical support related to the preparation of laboratory specimens in the area of lung injury and regeneration. In accordance with the policies and procedures of the Comparative Medicine Department, the Research Associate I will also perform specialized duties related to the husbandry of experimental animals, such as the observation of animals for abnormalities, perform animal care, room environmental monitoring and documentation, etc. as required. Incumbent must be a motivated self-starter with good teamwork practices and good communication skills. The Research Associate I member will review and remain current on literature as it relates to assigned studies. This position is also responsible for keeping accurate and detailed records of experiments and results. This position does not have supervisory responsibilities.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

Performs a variety of routine operational and research tasks and procedures

Keeps accurate and detailed project records of database lists, program materials, and data analyses

Maintains lab equipment and related records

Transports, processes, and logs samples

Maintains computer database with relevant clinical information

Observes and complies with safety standards and procedures
Department-Specific Duties and Responsibilities:
- Participation in laboratory meetings, keeping laboratory notebooks, performing calculations, tabulating data, summarizing methods and results of related experiments will be required
- Order supplies and maintain inventory, prepare chemical solutions, and maintain general lab cleanliness and perform other work-related duties as assigned
- Participation in routine rodent handling (safely transferring from one enclosure to another and primary enclosure exchanging for all species housed in the vivarium facilities) and approved non-routine rodent handling as assigned
- Provides care for animals that are immuno-compromised, which have known/unknown pathogens, and/or are designated as biohazardous
- Responsible for reading, comprehending, and following a large number of varying (Standard Operating Procedures) SOP’s related to the numerous biohazardous agents used in the Vivarium
- Observes and recognizes obvious symptoms of abnormalities in laboratory animals and promptly reports abnormalities to the appropriate individual (s)
- Assists with rodent breeding programs (noting birth dates, projecting weaning dates, etc as required)
- Organize and maintain mouse lines specific to the lab of Dr. Barry Stripp
- Perform animal work including - injections, tissue harvest as well as, breeding, weaning, and genotyping of transgenic and knockout animals as well as training other laboratory personnel in these procedures
- Other duties may include: embryo collection, tissue biopsy, collection of tissues for frozen sections, in situ hybridization, and immunohistochemistry and cell culture, photography, and computer cataloguing of data as needed

Education:
- Bachelor's degree in a Science related field, required
Experience:
- Understanding of general research objective
- Working knowledge of database management, personal computers, and presentation and imaging software
- Familiar with routine laboratory procedures and experimental protocols
- Must possess computer skills to include, but not limited to, Excel and Word
