The bi-institutional Husbandry and Operations provides monitoring and humane care for all animals housed within Memorial Sloan Kettering and Weill Cornell Medical College vivaria 7 days a week, 365 days a year.
This section is comprised of over 150 Animal Care Technicians, Facility Supervisors and Managers caring for upwards of 250,000 animals. Many of our employees are certified at various levels of competence by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science, an association of professionals that advances responsible laboratory animal care and used to benefit people and animals. These certifications demonstrate a deep understanding of the knowledge and required skillset in this field. Our goal is to provide the highest quality care to the animals in our charge to improve research and animal management at MSKCC and WCMC.
Key responsibilities include independently leading and maintaining productive and healthy rodent breeding colonies to support research at MSK and Weill Cornell Medicine. You will generate the appropriate numbers of mice of the correct genotype and age as requested by investigative staff. Other daily tasks include harvesting tissues for genotyping, interacting extensively with investigative staff, record keeping, billing, and identifying animal health issues.
You Will!
- Setting up matings
- Performing plug/pregnancy checks
- Weaning litters
- Retiring breeding pairs/cohorts
- Identification of animals
- Troubleshooting of breeding issues in consultation and collaboration with RARC Veterinary staff
- Colony maintenance
- Initiates transfer of animals to investigators using EnCCoMPass
- Perform husbandry and clinical services
- Crafting and transporting cages
- Generating labels/tags for cage identification and breeding records
- Performing injections (IP, IV, RO, SC) for investigators
- Performing euthanasia of neonatal and adult mice using appropriate methods including cervical dislocation
- Treating animals with clinical issues
- Perform accurate data/record keeping of mouse colonies through use of Microsoft Office, FileMaker Pro, or other appropriate methodologies
- Compile costs and recharges investigators for services and supplies provided or dispensed by the department
- Communicates with investigators, colony management staff, and RARC Operations staff verbally & electronically regarding breeding colony management and address issues and problems
You Have:
- 1-2 years mouse husbandry experience
- Bachelor's Degree in Veterinarian Technology, Animal Science, or Biology, preferred
- AALAS certification at Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT) level or higher or Academy of Surgical Research (ASR) certification (any level) or Master of Laboratory Animal Science (MLAS) from a regionally and nationally accredited U.S. college or university or an international equivalent, preferred.
- Licensed Veterinary Technician with certification at the AALAS LATG level, preferred.
