
Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume):
Bachelor's degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in a bioscience-related field. In lieu of a Bachelor's degree, an Associate's degree with two (2) years of full-time laboratory experience may be considered. Experience in a laboratory setting, such as in an academic, pharmaceutical or biotechnology environment. Experience working with animals. Familiarity with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Powerpoint).
Preferred Qualifications:
AALAS certification at the Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT or equivalent) level. Experience with biological laboratory skills which may include microscopy, spectrophotometry, centrifugation, electrophoresis, and blotting techniques. Experience with rodent procedures which may include inoculation procedures, blood collection and animal dissection. Basic mammalian cell culture and bio/immunological assay skills (e.g., ELISA, PCR, CFU and plaque assays). Experience working under BSL3/ABSL3 conditions. Experience working under Biosafety Level 2 conditions.
Brief Description of Duties:
The Division of Laboratory Animal Resources at the Renaissance School of Medicine, Stony Brook University, together with the Laboratory for Comparative Medicine (LCM) and the Department of Microbiology and Immunology, is looking for an Animal and Research Technician with strong rodent handling skills. The successful incumbent will work to support studies in rodent models of viral and bacterial diseases. Small animal procedural and infectious disease skills will include inoculations and injections, blood draws, euthanasia, cardiac bleeds, animal dissection, etc. The LCM Research Technician will have the ability to follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). The Research Technician must have the ability to work within biological laboratories and infectious disease models under biosafety level 2 (BSL2), biosafety level 3 (BSL3) and animal BSL3 (ABSL3) containment.
The successful incumbent will handle BSL2 and BSL3/ABSL3 viral and bacterial samples under appropriate biosafety conditions. The Research Technician will be performing animal handling techniques to support infectious disease research studies (e.g., i.n./i.d./i.v./i.m./s.c. inoculations, aerosol delivery, blood draws, euthanasia, animal dissection). Processing immune cells from blood, bone marrow, lymph nodes and spleen and other organs is essential to the role. Along with performing PCR, ELISA, organ burden analysis and other assays on animal serum and tissue samples. The Research Technician will be responsible for ensuring that SOPs are followed when hazardous materials are used in connection with research animals. Strong organizational skills and work ethic are essential. This includes meticulous attention to detail in a hands-on environment. The incumbent will be responsible for laboratory notetaking accuracy and ability to adhere to study protocols and plans. The successful incumbent must have the ability to work independently as well as part of a team. The LCM Research Technician must have excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Conduct research experiments in animal models of infectious diseases, including inoculation procedures, delivery of agents via aerosol, monitoring the course of infection, blood collection, animal dissection, collection of tissues and analysis of host response and microbial burden.

Special Notes:
This is a full time appointment. FLSA Nonexempt position, eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA.
Evening and weekend work will be required at times.
