Georgetown's Division of Comparative Medicine (DCM) provides state-of-the-art facilities and quality animal care to support biomedical research and teaching missions of the University while complying with all applicable animal welfare regulations and guidelines. Through a collaborative approach, the DCM serves, advises and educates researchers, staff, and students on animal models and bio-methodology while promoting best practices for the responsible use of animals.
Job Overviews
The Animal Care Technician 1 supports Georgetown University's research vision and mission by providing a compliant and ethical research facility to conduct biomedical research - and specifically the Division of Comparative Medicine's support of animal research initiatives. Duties include but are not limited to:
Provides daily husbandry for laboratory animals, including handling, feeding, watering, changing cages, and monitoring their heath.
Follows standard operating procedures and maintains compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
Assists with cage wash and autoclave operation
Sanitizes areas and/or equipment.
Work Interactions
Reporting to the Animal Care Supervisor, and following guidance from the Facility Manager and the Director of the Division of Comparative Medicine, the Animal Care Technician 1 also interacts with other animal care technicians, and with veterinary technicians, veterinarians and research faculty and staff.
Qualifications
High school diploma
Fluency in English for business communication
Ability to lift 50 pounds, to work in hot and/or steamy environments, to work with animals/animal odors, and to perform work that involves repetitive bending, twisting and pushing motions
Preferred qualifications
Experience working with animals
AAALAS certification
Working Environment: The Animal Care Technician 1 works primarily in a designated work area, and also spends a significant amount of time in the animal facility where they exposed to biological hazards, chemicals, and laboratory animals.
