Comparative Medicine Services (CMS) at Tufts University in downtown Boston has an opening for a Preclinical Veterinary Technologist. This position is part of an expert veterinary team that provide hands on services for in-vivo research studies at Tufts University. Studies include cutting edge surgical device development, pharmacological and drug therapy studies, basic research, and teaching and training labs.
This is a mid-level veterinary technologist position with room to grow into our senior technologist position (also available for less experienced candidates is an associate technologist position).
What You'll Do
The Preclinical Veterinary Technologist is responsible for coordinating and performing animal work for research projects, including both pre and post-procedural care for both rodent and non-rodent models. This position reports to the CMS Preclinical Services Supervisor.
Responsibilities include:
Administers treatments and provides care to the animals as directed by the CMS veterinarian(s) or written in approved protocol
Provides social, food, and physical enrichment to the animals
Executes technical assistance services for the investigative staff including injections, blood collection, euthanasia, etc.
Assists in study development and coordination, inventory, ordering supplies, protocol writing, and generating estimates and study sheets for proposed work
Follows the procedures and guidelines approved by institution
Additional work may include tissue harvest and use of laboratory equipment including centrifuge, microscopes, etc.
What We're Looking For
Basic Requirements:
Knowledge and experience typically acquired through a completion of an Associates Degree in Veterinary Science or Technology, Animal Science, Biological Sciences, or related field
1-3 years Veterinary Technician or laboratory animal medicine experience
Technician desire to achieve Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT) certification within 3 years of employment
Preferred Qualifications:
The ideal candidate would have a Bachelor' Degree in a related field, and/or Certified Veterinary Technician and 3+ years of experience in related field with some level of AALAS certification, excellent writing skills, comfortable using the Microsoft Office
Able to perform the flowing techniques in rodents and/or other animals: PO, SQ, ID, IM, IP dosing, blood collection, necropsy and tissue collection, anesthesia monitoring
This individual would demonstrate strong verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to interact with investigative staff, and communicate animal health issues, compliance issues, training, facility issues, etc. in a professional collegial manner with members of the investigative and Tufts CMS staff
This individual would be detail oriented and have superb organizational skills
This individual would work effectively in a variety of situations be able to handle multiple tasks simultaneously, demonstrate good work habits, and show flexibility and initiative
