GDIT is seeking an Assistant Technician (AART) in support of the Naval Center Portsmouth () Combat Group (CTRG). The AART will support the Attending Veterinarian with the execution of protocols. The position will provide care for animals, including large and small animals such as swine and rats, used in and .
The AART shall:
Assist in the receipt of new animals into the organization.
Assist with identification procedures (i.e., tattooing, marking, and microchipping).
Catch and restrain animals when receiving, issuing, and moving to different cages or for use by professional personnel.
Prepare cage and rack cards matching them with animal identification and number. Identify animal rooms in accordance with standard operating procedures and follow indicated personal protective equipment (PPE) guidance.
Place the proper amount of bedding in animal cages and distribute the cages and racks to the appropriate storage areas.
Feed and water animals paying careful attention to feed lot numbers or milling dates and special dietary and vitamin requirements. Feed animals according to instructions from the veterinarian, facility manager, or veterinary technician.
Carefully observe the appearance and activity of animals in various stages and report obvious signs of illness or death to the veterinarian, facility manager, or veterinary technician.
Maintain accurate, complete, and timely documentation of animal health and/or facility related activities.
Assist with ensuring sanitation and cleanliness of animal facility areas. Assist with husbandry and animal care procedures in accordance with standard operating procedures and requirements.
Assist the veterinary technical staff with veterinary procedures as necessary. Procedures may include running laboratory diagnostics such as bloodwork and fecal samples, record preparation; surgical/procedural preparation; induction and maintenance of anesthesia, including endotracheal intubation and operation of gas anesthesia machines; operation of physiological monitoring equipment; collection and recording of anesthetic and experimental and parameters; provide post-operative monitoring and recovery care, including pain and distress assessment and administration of analgesics and other medications, as prescribed.
While duties are performed primarily during normal hours Monday through Friday, rotating weekend hours and holidays, consisting of not more than 1 weekend a month for a 3 hour period per day, may be needed for care/husbandry when animals are onsite. The AART will receive 2-4 weeks’ notification of the need for weekend hours. In the event of an emergency, and base is closed to non-essential personnel, the contractor will report as necessary for animal welfare.
HS diploma/GED
2 years of experience supporting including husbandry and as well as assisting with technical procedures
Must be a US citizen with the ability to obtain a favorable NACLC T3 security investigation prior to start date.
Preferred:
Registered Assistant Laboratory Technician (rALAT) certification or equivalent
