Date: January 2023 Classification & Title: 8196P2, Animal Care Professional 2 Working Title: Technical Trainer Percent Time: 100% Work Schedule/Hours: Monday– Friday 7:00am– 3:30pm
POSITION OVERVIEW This position is responsible for providing hands-on training in technical skills. The incumbent will also identify training gaps and help develop methods to close any gaps identified. The position will provide feedback directly to the Vet Tech Managers to help determine that a new veterinary technician has successfully passed probation. The Technical Trainer must have a clear and detailed understanding of all vivarium’s and be able to support training throughout RAR. POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES Employee Training (70%): Conduct training of new technical employees including training new RAR vet tech employees in specific techniques as well as University Investigators and their staff (dosing, bleeding, anesthesia, etc…in various species) Help maintain training records of new employees Mentor new RAR Veterinary Technicians. Provide feedback to the Vet Tech Managers in regards to the quality of work completed by new employees Assist in onboarding new RAR Veterinarians, Veterinary Residents, and Veterinary Technicians In collaboration with research staff determine what training they may need and assist them with achieving the training Review and provide recommendations for new Standard Operating Procedures (SOP)/Standards of Care (SOC) and updates to current SOPs/SOCs Create and refine training material Conduct training that fulfill both elective and IACUC-mandated training requirements for research staff Train non-technical staff to safely work with a variety of species Schedule training with RAR employees and research staff through professional communication
Strategic Planning (10%): Based on the strategic plan for the department assess the future need for training and development Evaluate current training methods and programs. Determine how to further enhance training programs Assess training programs to ensure that they contain the appropriate level of technical content for personnel Review and provide recommendations for new SOP/SOC and updates to current SOP/SOCs Work with Training and Compliance Lead to identify any training gaps and design corrective actions
Inventory Control (10%): Maintain equipment and supplies needed for training Coordinate with managers and animal care supervisors any needed equipment for new employees
Professional Development (5%): Participate in department, college, and University events, meetings, projects and initiatives.
Additional Duties (5%): The RAR Training and Compliance Lead and Veterinary Technician Manager may change or assign other duties to this position
PHYSICAL and ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS : Proof of current Tetanus vaccine must be provided before starting of employment Rabies vaccines or titer will be complete or employee may complete a declination form Measles vaccine or titer will be completed Toxoplasmosis titer will be drawn or declination form completed There will be exposure to animal allergens Annual test for Tuberculosis will be completed Due to high level of noise annual hearing test are performed The employee may work in wet rooms Employees may work in outside environments in all weather conditions Employees may be required to wear Powered Air Purifying Respirator or N95 Mask
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: BA/BS or veterinary technician degree with 2 years of experience or a combination of related education and experience equal to 6 years Ability to perform various technical techniques (injections (SC, IV, IM), gavage, blood collection) in various species
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Veterinary Technician Certification 3 years of experience working with animal husbandry within a research facility. 1 year experience coordinating and managing training programs Professional Trainer Certificate Documented success in developing and implementing training programs Demonstrated knowledge of learning principals, instructional design as well as project management expertise AALAS Certification at the Laboratory Animal Technologist Level Excellent communication, organizational and time management skills Strong interpersonal skills Advanced Computer skills including spreadsheets and maintenance using – Excel and Google Sheets.
