The University of Texas at Austin invites applications for the position of Director of the Animal Resources Center (ARC). The ARC provides direction and leadership for a comprehensive, AAALAC-accredited animal resources program encompassing all aspects of laboratory animal care and use within the University. Seven centrally-managed vivaria encompassing ~121,000 sq. ft. are directly staffed and overseen by the ARC. The ARC also provides oversight for additional IACUC-approved satellite animal facilities located throughout the campus and at off-campus sites, including the Marine Science Institute located at Port Aransas.
This position serves a critical function in support of excellent animal care and welfare within the context of the University's highly successful biomedical research program, and will provide research support to University scientists through the development and maintenance of optimum laboratory animal facilities. The ARC provides valuable consultation and education in the areas of laboratory animal medicine, research methods, animal models, protocol submission and review, surgical techniques, variables that affect animal experimentation, and research compliance.

The Director is responsible for overseeing the operational, financial, and personnel-related activities of the ARC, and is expected to engage with its internal and external constituencies in order to provide animal care and veterinary medical services for laboratory animals maintained for research or teaching purposes. The position reports to the Vice President for Research, Scholarship and Creative Endeavors who is the Institutional Official and has ultimate authority over the campus animal care and use program. The Director serves a critical role in meeting regulatory requirements and ensuring that the program is in alignment with recognized standards of veterinary care for vertebrate research animals. The Director will partner with the Office of Research Support and Compliance and serve as a member of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) which has primary oversight of the University animal care and use program, and will also support the Institutional Biosafety Committee which has primary oversight of biosafety practices and recombinant DNA research. The ARC Director is a member of the Vice President for Research’s leadership team, and is appointed to multiple campus-wide advisory groups.
Responsibilities
Provides knowledge and expertise in laboratory animal medicine and surgery, biosafety, and animal models of human disease in the context of a complex, high-performing research institution.
Responds to animal care compliance issues and recommends updates to operational policies for the ARC animal care and husbandry programs.
Provides leadership, support, and guidance to the ARC management.
Participates in IACUC protocol reviews.
Directs and/or assists in the preparation of reports to regulatory agencies and University officials participating in educational programs.
Collaborates with the University research community to disseminate information, provide guidance, and develop policies and procedures to assure compliance with the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare at National Institutes of Health - NIH (OLAW) regulations and AAALAC.
Develops short and long-term strategic plans related to budget, personnel, facilities, and equipment overseeing the development and management of the ARC budget. Reviews high-level budgetary and resource allocation decisions including facility and equipment needs. Prepares financial status reports to senior management, as needed.
Engages in funding pursuits in the financial support of the ARC. Provides leadership and coordination for sponsored project proposals and awards, provides budgetary information related to university and CSU subsides, and maintains sustainable billable rates for cost recovery using methods compliant with federal requirements.
Salary
$230,000 + depending on qualifications

The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.

Required qualifications
Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from an AVMA-accredited college or school; licensed to practice veterinary medicine in at least one U.S. state.
Advanced knowledge of veterinary surgery, medicine, and anesthesia as well as experience with animal resource management in a large institutional research environment.
Advanced knowledge of current OLAW, NIH, USDA, and AAALAC guidelines and regulations.
Five years of leadership experience in an animal medicine laboratory.
Demonstrated experience working in a high-volume environment, overseeing and prioritizing multiple diverse tasks with deadlines.
Strong interpersonal, communication (written and verbal), organizational, and administrative skills.
Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.
Preferred qualifications
ACLAM board certification.
Over five years’ experience in a management role at an animal care facility.
