A Brief Overview This role reports to the Attending Veterinarian/Sr. Director and manages day to day operations of the veterinary care program, the veterinary team and the CHOP DVR Training Program.
In addition to supervisory and management responsibilities, this role serves as clinical veterinarian for a variety of laboratory animals (predominantly rodent) providing veterinary medical, diagnostic, and treatment services and supports the IACUC by performing veterinary review and post approval monitoring (as needed). This role expected to rotate veterinary on-call as scheduled during assigned weekends and holidays to assist with any animal health related needs.
What you will do
Research Support
Develop research services as requested by research faculty.
Review and constructively comment on protocol submission content in an effort to align the submission with acceptable species specific veterinary medical care and use standards, institutional guidelines and policies.
Ensure proper use of anesthetics, analgesics, tranquilizers, and methods of euthanasia.
Directly support animal research studies of significant size, scope, and complexity by conducting pre-study meetings and training veterinary staff as studies require.
Establish and maintain strong collaborative relationships with scientists and other research and support staff
Training
Oversee and manage the CHOP DVR Training Program
Conduct organized trainings on aspects of aseptic technique, surgery, common laboratory animal procedures, medical record documentation, and animal handling/restraint.
Mentor veterinary technicians, husbandry technicians and rotating students in the field of laboratory animal medicine.
General Administrative
Assist leadership with the maintenance of animal care and research program that serves a large translational hospital base.
Directly manage veterinary staff
Assist in ensuring facility and researcher compliance with PHS/OLAW guidelines, AAALAC-International accreditation requirements, animal welfare regulations and all other applicable federal, state, local/regional regulations regarding animal care and use. Maintain and provide necessary revision to the AAALAC-International program description.
Understand the current institutional SOP’s, guidelines, and policies and assist in the development and review of the documents relative to programmatic operations.
Ensure that all animals are used and cared for appropriately according to approved protocols.
Oversee the maintenance of animal health records
Assure clear and organized records for animal clinical cases are maintained until cases are resolved.
Provide oversight for programs administered by DVR.
Provide veterinary medical diagnostic, surgical, and/or treatment services within the animal facilities.
Ensure flawless animal care and welfare in conducting research studies through study design and implementation, and championing the "3 Rs" principles.
Lead veterinary-related continuous improvement initiatives as determined by departmental strategic planning, by customer feedback or by obvious deficits/needs in the practice of laboratory animal medicine.
Serve as an alternate or voting member on the IACUC with authority and responsibility for activities involving animals that include protocol reviews, attending IACUC meetings, facility inspections, program reviews & providing veterinary input. Thoroughly evaluate and review submitted animal use protocols and amendments, providing guidance and support to IACUC, principal investigators, and biosafety personnel. Ensure a close and collaborative working relationship with IACUC.
Financial management – assist leadership in financial management of the DVR program including budget process, rate setting, cost accounting and other financial resources.
Other responsibilities related to management of the DVR program, as needed and as assigned by leadership.

Skills and Abilities
Excellent verbal, written, technical and communication skills
Strong customer service skills. Enjoys working with similarly dedicated people in a team within a high-energy, fast-paced and diverse research environment.
Must be able to work with common laboratory animals, animal waste products, chemical, radiological, and biological hazards and don appropriate PPE (dust mask, N95/PAPR).
Ability to achieve project objectives on multiple, complex projects running simultaneously
Strong knowledge of laws, regulations, and policies that govern animal research, and current practice standards in laboratory animal medicine and management.
Broad knowledge of laboratory animal health/medicine, diagnostics, pathology, veterinary treatments, surgical procedures and clinical care of a large variety of research animal species.
