Department Description
The California National Primate Research Center, CNPRC at UC Davis, is an Organized Research Unit that conducts interdisciplinary research programs on significant human health problems where non-human primates is the animal of choice. In addition to its major efforts in the area of research, the CNPRC is also committed to both UC Davis and NIH missions of teaching and service.
Job Summary
Under general direction of the Assistant Director, Primate Services, the Manager leads and manages the operations unit that supports the CNPRC Compliance, Education, & Training Services, which includes the development, coordination, and assurance of AALAS/GLP compliant and accredited training procedures and practices in laboratory animal science. As directed by the Assistant Director, manage, and direct the animal care and use training program, which includes the development and design, facilitation, and implementation of a comprehensive training program with the primary aim to improve the performance quality and productivity of the Center's employees working directly with nonhuman primates. Develop curriculum that will reinforce on-the-job training for staff, faculty/researchers, graduate students, students, and visitors. Assess developmental needs to drive training initiatives and identifies and arrange suitable training solutions for employees, students, and faculty. Actively search, creatively design, and implement effective methods to educate, enhance performance and recognize performance.
Actively participate in writing and evaluating the Center's Standard Operating Procedures and Attention to Details (ATDs) and other job aides that support colony health and care management as well as training on technical skills needed to for research support. Oversee and provide Center wide training in all aspects of regulatory compliance as it relates to animal research and facility compliance.
Contribute to the accomplishment of the Division of Primate Services goals, objectives and standards. Provide leadership, including efficient and clear assignments to subordinate staff, trainees, and support departmental growth (orientation and training of a diverse group including animal care and research staff), provide assessments of employee performance, and providing leadership in all areas of animal care, through leading, directing, organizing and monitoring training and compliance activities and functions to ensure overall success of the CNPRC colony care and research support services to investigators, while ensuring service excellence.
Work with animals that are infected with infectious agents. Category BSL 2 and 3 agents including, but not limited to: STVL. Simian Immunodeficiency Virus (SIV) /Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), Astrovirus, CMV, Measles, Herpes's Simples Virus (HSV), Zika Virus (ZKV), Chikungunya Virus (CHKV) and Coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2).
This position is within the Compliance, Education, & Training Unit (CETU) of the Division of Primate Services.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Lift and carry objects weighing up to 23 kg (50 lbs), and lift objects weighing approximately 19 kg (42lbs) to approximately shoulder height; able to move, push and pull heavy wheeled equipment such as cage racks (elevation 7 feet high) and loaded carts and animal transfer cages weighing 35 pounds. Lift and move a 25-pound sack of chow.
Push rolling cages that may weigh from 250-1,000 pounds. Manually lift and move cages weighing up to 90 pounds from wall.
Able to move unassisted through various animal housing areas located in several separate buildings, and prolonged standing during exams and other procedures which may exceed 4 hours. -Perform diversified tasks that may require squatting, kneeling, bending, stooping or standing.
Restrain animals for prolonged periods of time.
Position self to move and handle a variety of animals weighing up to 40 pounds.
Substantial contact with animals, including repeated capture and prolonged restraint of animals.
Wear protective clothing for extended periods of time including gown, coveralls, gloves, masks, face shields, goggles, sleeves, and head covers.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Measles vaccination or proof of illness required. This position is subject to Medical Surveillance procedures and review in accordance with Federal and State Laws and Regulations and University Policy. Employee shall participate in required preventative medical and medical monitoring programs which may include blood tests, immunizations, -TB screening, Blood borne and Airborne Pathogen training, etc., and are provided to meet Federal, State and University requirements.
Must be willing to perform assigned duties in BioSafety Level (ABSL) 1, 2, or 3 facility where nonhuman primates may be either naturally or experimentally infected with potentially hazardous diseases such as HIV, SIV, or Herpes B virus.
Work may involve exposure to zoonotic agents through injury, by direct contact with animals or their tissues and body fluids, or by contact with equipment contaminated by animals or their tissues and body fluids.
Required to wear protective clothing and respirator in circumstances that require personal protection from infectious diseases and animals.
Work may involve exposure to potentially hazardous chemicals.
Work may involve exposure to wet or slick walking surfaces and sanitizing chemicals.
Restricted vacation during peak workload periods. Work irregular shifts, including weekends, holidays, and evenings. Work overtime, occasional weekends on short notice.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Additional Minimum License/Certification:
Certification of American Association for Laboratory Animal Science certification as a Laboratory Animal Technologist (LATG).
Minimum Education/Experience:
Bachelor's degree in animal science.
Extensive applied experience in animal training, conditioning, and safe handling of nonhuman primates in practices and theory that include acquired expertise in animal related skills training, development, evaluation, and regulatory documentation and recordkeeping.
Experience in the design and instruction of training curricula using a variety of teaching pedagogy that include adult learning theory/education, contextual/experiential hands-on learning, and dyadic teaching principles. Experience in training and development in workplace practices supporting on-the-job training, which includes analysis, development, and implementation of a comprehensive training program.
Experience in the development of operational work-related processes into written recommendations for changes to SOPs and training documents.
Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA) :
Applied and in-depth knowledge of animal care and research support operations in a large research facility and animal vivaria.
Applied and in-depth knowledge and ability to evaluate and interpret complex USDA regulations, AAALAC program compliance guidelines, OLAW guidelines, relevant UC policies on animal care and research, and review and application of research protocols and SOPs. Knowledge of the federal, state, and local laws and regulations and environmental conditions necessary for the care and use of laboratory animals. Knowledge of animal husbandry standards, animal handling and diseases of animals.
Knowledge of federal animal care regulations and American Association for Accrediting Laboratory Animal Care (AAALAC) and National Institute of Health (NIH) guidelines; anatomical and physiological differences of small lab animals; diseases and illnesses common to small lab animals; procedures for diagnostic tests of fecal, blood, and urine samples.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Additional Preferred License/Certification:
The ability to become certified as a train-the-trainer through AALAS (American Associate for Laboratory Animal Science) program of training for staff at all certification training levels.
Preferred Education/Experience:
Experience in handling and training nonhuman primates including capture and physical restraint. Ability to instruct, train, and guide performance in animal care according to AAALAC Standards, record data collection and keeping, regulatory compliance, and Good Laboratory Practice guidelines.
Applied experience and ability to present/facilitate training sessions and courses on complex concepts, practices, policies, and procedures to large and small groups; one-on-one training and extensive public speaking as well as the ability effectively communicate and interact with supervisors, faculty, peers, and co-workers.
Experience in applied animal handling and technical procedures associated with laboratory animal science, interpreting, and applying rules, safety, and regulations to training and analyzing workflow and operational and procedures to build training job specs.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA) :
Knowledge of Quarantine Regulations and in infection control practices (includes safety evaluation in a research environment) as required by CDC and the State of California pertaining to non-human primates.
Knowledge of health and safety requirements in a large animal research setting.
Knowledge of primate behavior and ability to recognize changes in physical appearance or behavior.
Knowledge and understanding of adherence to biohazard containment procedures necessary for performance in BSL 2 or 3 facility.
Knowledge of primate life span and relevant care levels for nursery care to adult level care and geriatric care, including intensive care of infants experimentally infected with infectious diseases.
Knowledge of plan for the Psychological Well-Being of non-human primates and environmental enrichment strategies as required by the Animal Welfare Act.
