The UAB Animal Resources Program (ARP) invites applications for a senior-level laboratory animal veterinarian to join a dedicated team of professionals as Assistant Director – Animal Resources Program/Attending Veterinarian.
ARP is the administrative and service unit responsible for all laboratory animal care at UAB. It is led by the Executive Director, who reports to the Associate VP for Research Facilities and Infrastructure. The Assistant Director will report directly to the Executive Director. ARP strives to provide the best possible animal care and support, a safe and secure work environment, and standard of practices to reduce experimental variation. ARP has 100+ staff, and oversees ~170,000nsf in 13 buildings, including an off-site swine designated pathogen free facility and an on campus regional biocontainment facility. The average daily animal census is 150,000 animals. ARP supports approximately 450 PIs using animals. The UAB Animal Care and Use Program is AAALACi accredited, registered with the USDA, and maintains an NIH OLAW assurance.
The successful candidate will assist the Executive Director with management of the ARP veterinary medical and surgical programs and serve as Attending Veterinarian for UAB, which includes serving as the primary interface for regulatory agencies and related matters.
We will rely on you to:
Assist with leadership and management of ARP programs, develop solutions and processes to improve the program, animal health, programmatic efficiency, and research quality.
Serve as the Attending Veterinarian for UAB, and as such the primary interface for regulatory agencies and related matters.
Develop improved practices to increase communication, feedback, and employee job satisfaction.
Provide resources to improve the level of animal care and quality of research provided and conducted by the veterinary staff, care staff, investigators, and their staff.
Provide clinical and surgical care of research animals.
Review IACUC protocols and provide post approval monitoring.
Participate in efforts to secure external grant funding.
Participate in national associations and/or networks to promote UAB on the national stage.
Provide investigator support in the form of tailored descriptions for extramural applications, identifying potential collaborators and resources, and experimental design for animal aspects of projects.
If desired, develop a personal research program. Primary or secondary faculty appointments in a range of academic departments are feasible.
Qualifications
Doctor of Veterinary Medicine and eight (8) years of related experience required. Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement.
Current credentials as an American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM) Diplomate or similar board veterinary specialty (i.e., American College of Veterinary Surgeons or American College Veterinary Pathologist) preferred.
State of Alabama Veterinary License must be obtained within two (2) years from hire.
