Job Summary: | This position works closely with the WNPRC Compliance Manager and the Attending Veterinarian to ensure compliance with Federal, State, and University research regulations with respect to occupational health and safety, including biological, chemical, and radiation safety. This position coordinates the continued development and implementation of the Center's OSHA compliance program, including identifying operational and safety issues while developing research laboratory management plans and developing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). This position provides training and guidance to faculty, staff, and trainees on all applicable occupational health and safety regulations and policies, as well as on related WNPRC SOPs. This will require the incumbent to gain knowledge of the many research areas of the Center. |
Responsibilities: | Identifies and develops plans to address safety issues, provides consultation, and tracks and manages cases in a specific area of specialty so all work, recreation, and research can be performed safely and in compliance will all applicable federal, state, and local regulations and standards. Makes recommendations for the control of identified hazards and assesses hazards using relevant regulatory methodologies. - 15% Secures resources and schedules logistics for a safety program
- 25% Identifies operational and safety issues and develops improvement plans and standard operating procedures
- 30% Provides knowledge and guidance to internal and external stakeholders including leadership, in a specialized area of safety such biosafety, chemical, hazardous materials, agriculture, lake, radiation, and Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA)
- 15% Directs logistical activities, allocates resources and investigates components of specific health and safety cases
- 10% Communicates findings to necessary stakeholders
- 5% Reviews industry updates and may assist in developing safety communication materials based on industry changes

Qualifications: | Required Qualifications: -At least two years of relevant occupational health or safety experience or healthcare administration experience; will consider applicants with substantial laboratory animal research experience (preferably with nonhuman primates) -Must be proficient with Microsoft Office, including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint -Demonstrated experience with online databases, including ability to mine data for reporting purposes -Ability to exercise sound judgment, discretion, and maintain confidentiality -Strong organizational skills necessary, including the ability to efficiently and effectively manage multiple tasks with numerous interruptions -Meticulous attention to detail -Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to relate complex information regarding occupational health and safety issues to a variety of people with different levels of knowledge and understanding on the topic -Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work in a multi-cultural environment -Must possess a valid driver's license that meets the standards of UW Risk Management in order to operate State vehicles. A pre-hire driver's authorization check will be conducted on final candidates.
Preferred Qualifications: -Prior training or teaching experience helpful -Working knowledge of Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations, Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) policies and procedures, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) regulations and/or the National Institutes of Health (NIH) safe biomedical laboratory practices strongly desirable -Familiarity with a wide range of policies and procedures to the University of Wisconsin-Madison, particularly with environmental health and safety, highly preferred |

The Wisconsin National Primate Research Center (WNPRC) is one of seven federally supported National Primate Research Centers and the only one in the Midwest. The WNPRC advances scientific collaboration and discovery, education, and training. The Center provides compassionate and expert animal care while contributing to the improvement of human and animal health and quality of life through research.
Research with nonhuman primates often serves as a critical link between basic science and safe human clinical applications. The WNPRC was the site of the world's first in vitro-fertilized monkey in 1984 and the first pluripotent stem cells (first monkey, then human, in the 1990s). Our research has helped advance therapies for people with HIV, kidney disease, glaucoma, developmental disorders, autoimmune diseases, mental illness, polycystic ovary syndrome, infections that threaten healthy pregnancies, and much more.
