A post-doctoral fellow in The Johns Hopkins Neurosurgery spinal fusion laboratory would essentially run this basic science and translational research laboratory. The post-doc would be in charge of undergraduate, graduate and medical students as well neurosurgery residents rotating through the lab.  Our focus is to develop better ways of performing spinal fusion surgery to optimize bone healing and outcomes for patients. Projects range from basic science to translational with a focus on tissue engineering approaches. We collaborate with top caliber biomedical engineers who are also interested in tissue engineering approaches with a bone biology background. Additionally, we have developed a novel bone graft that is patent pending, but is the ideal carrier for bone growth factors and other molecules that promote spinal fusion. Animal models are utilized to perform translational studies. An ideal candidate would have completed a PhD with a background in bone biology, but this is not required. The candidate should also be familiar with handling laboratory animals and potentially performing animal surgery. A strong candidate must be competent in written and spoken English. A preferred candidate would be able to write manuscripts and grants.
