The role principally involves management oversight of the veterinary clinical services program of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center (Fred Hutch). A key component of this position is to provide veterinary care oversight and direction in association with applicable federal, state, local and institutional laws, policies, guidelines, and procedures governing laboratory animal health and welfare. This position also serves as a technical resource for research protocol development and implementation.
Scope of Responsibilities:
Under the general direction of the Attending Veterinarian/ Associate Vice President, Shared Resources, the Associate Director of Clinical Veterinary Services, Comparative Medicine (Assoc. Director) will provide the appropriate environment to support biomedical research directed towards significant human health issues related to cancer and other diseases conducted at Fred Hutch. The Assoc. Director has oversight and leadership responsibilities for the veterinary clinical services within CM including animal care within the small and large animal facilities.
The Assoc. Director responsibilities encompass the allocation of available animal resources to ensure appropriate animal acquisition and production, veterinary medicine and surgery, animal behavioral well-being and environmental enrichment, and health and genetics monitoring including biosecurity. Additionally, this position is integral to assuring that the Fred Hutch remains compliant with all applicable regulations, guidelines and policies, and maintenance of AAALAC International accreditation. Participation as a member of the Fred Hutch IACUC is expected. This position is expected to maintain and provide expert guidance regarding care and use of laboratory animals at the Fred Hutch as well as participate in animal care and use collaboration with the University of Washington and other local, national, and international biomedical research enterprises.
The Associate Director provides direct or delegated oversight of the Fred Hutch veterinary care program. The CM Associate Director works with the Attending Veterinarian, IACUC Chair, IRO staff, CM Husbandry and Operations management staff and other Fred Hutch staff to ensure that CM is providing effective and efficient services to its users.
