Department Description
Under the direction of the campus Attending Veterinarian, TRACS ensures humane care and use of animals used in teaching and research and is a leader in UC Davis' Animal Care Program. TRACS is dedicated to helping conduct animal experiments in accordance with the highest scientific and ethical principles and assisting with the advancement of scientific knowledge and the future of research goals set forth by the University of California and the UC Davis campus.
Job Summary
Work under supervision of the Animal Care Supervisor. Assist the department in maintaining rodent colonies for researchers utilizing TRACS animal holding space (including but not limited to breeding, weaning, perform permanent identification, and obtaining tissue samples).
Will also perform animal husbandry duties in the absence of Supervisor or other animal care staff. Act as lead by training and assigning work for other staff, and providing input into the review of staff performance. Review and perform record keeping procedures. Recommend design or modification of animal facilities and devices for feeding, watering, and restraining animals; work with multiple lab animal species including non-human primates and large animals; maintain facility biosecurity and ensure that safety standards are being met; isolate infected animals. Train staff to handle animals & animal related injuries.
This position requires a high level of organization and attention to detail and the incumbent Is expected to perform all duties independently with minimal supervision. Perform other duties as assigned.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Work with and handle a variety of animals which may include swing, sheep, and calves weighing over 100 pounds.
Bend, squat, kneel, stand, reach above shoulder level, and move on hard surfaces up to 7 hours/day.
Push, pull, and maneuver heavy objects and equipment weighing over 150 lbs.
Lift from ground level up to 50 lbs.
Required to wear protective clothing and respirator in circumstances that require personal protection from infectious disease.
May use protective equipment such as safety glasses, shoes, clothing, gloves, etc.
Work in a dusty and odorous environment created by the nature of various animal species and their related needs; work with dander and hay.
Work with animal dander, bedding material, and powdered/special diets.
Position may, at times, require employee to work with or be in areas where hazardous materials and/or infectious diseases are present.
Must be willing to perform assigned duties in BioSafety Level (BSL) 1 or 2/3 facilities where animals such as non-human primates may be either naturally or experimentally infected with potentially hazardous diseases such as HIV, SIV, or Herpes B virus.
Wear protective clothing for extended periods of time including: gown, coveralls, gloves, masks, face shields, goggles, sleeves, and head covers.
Ability to work in various temperatures typical to Northern California. Indoor working conditions are at times warmer than the outdoor temperature due to machinery that produces heat increasing the indoor temperature.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work required weekends and holidays.
Incumbent must be able to work flexible hours, occasional overtime, weekends and holidays. There is restricted vacation during peak holiday times.
Position will rotate to different TRACS locations in Davis and Sacramento, as needed, on short notice. This may include working under different supervisors and working with different animal species. Parking rates may vary and are based on parking zones. Incumbent will be responsible for parking costs should they elect this transportation method. More information about parking and other transportation options can be found on the UC Davis and UC Davis Health Transportation Services websites. This position is subject to Medical Surveillance procedures and review in accordance with Federal and State Laws and Regulations and University Policy.
Valid CA driver's license and participation in DMV Pull-Notice System required.
Use of university vehicle to drive to all TRACS maintained vivariums across Davis and Sacramento campuses.
Must qualify for DOJ clearance for ABSL-3 laboratory access.
Substantial contact with animals.
Work with all lab animal species housed in TRACS facilities.
Promote a safe work environment.
Responsible for safety training, accident prevention, following safety policies.
Required attendance at training classes at department's discretion.
May be required to work in the case of an emergency or major event.
No smoking, eating or drinking in animal areas.
Must review and adhere to the TRACS Employee Handbook and all applicable UC policies, processes, and programs.
Read and follow all the expectations for Animal Care Technician.
Continue to perform animal husbandry duties as needed.
Complete AAALAS certification at the LAT level (Laboratory Animal Technologist certification) or higher within one year of employment.
Communicate directly with PI's (principal investigators) in a professional and respectful manner.
Be responsible for area Quality Control program. i.e. ATP & RODAC testing, Hydropac pouch testing and record keeping

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Education/Experience:
Experience performing animal husbandry duties including feeding, detailed cleaning/maintenance, infection control, health observations, weighing, handling and physical restraint, including those in distress.
Demonstrated knowledge and experience in the management and breeding of traditional and transgenic rodents. Animals include rodents and other lab animals.
Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA) :
Knowledge of TRACS daily operations and business procedures as it pertains to all of TRACS' animal holding areas, the Rodent Health Surveillance Program, teaching and training per diem and census collection procedures, supply ordering, and including sick animal reporting utilizing current database system used by Campus Vet Services. Knowledge of the areas above for institutions/programs similar to TRACS will be considered if relevant.
Strong organization, planning, and communication (oral and written) skills to coordinate activities between units and investigators, campus facilities, to consult with investigators regarding their research projects; and to train investigators, lab staff, and students as needed. This includes skills to use electronic mail and database applications.
Knowledgeable in the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) policies and procedures, and how they relate to a TRACS' Vivarium Hazard Safety Sheet (VHSS).
Knowledge to recognize common health problems in laboratory animals and skills to recognize animal care needs as they relate to the TRACS mission. Knowledge of medical terminology, disease processes, and medical documentation.
Skills to coordinate and maintain breeding records for laboratory animals, both electronically and by hard copy.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Additional Preferred License/Certification:
AAALAS certification at the LAT level (Laboratory Animal Technician certification) or higher. (Non-certified new hires must obtain certification within one year of employment.)
Preferred Education/Experience:
Upper division college coursework (or equivalent work experience) in biological sciences such as animal science, genetics or similar field with experience in the management of transgenic mouse colonies, barrier facilities and lab animal management principles.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA) :
Knowledge of standard Lab animal (including NHP's and livestock) handling protocols regarding safely working with research and teaching animals in an animal facility including transportation.
Knowledge of occupational safety guidelines for radiation, biohazards and chemical hazards. As well as knowledge of current disinfection and disease control within animal housing facilities. This includes decontamination techniques such as VHP (Vapor Hydrogen Peroxide) or Chlorine Dioxide Gas.
Knowledge of emergency response protocols.
Skills and ability to lead and to work with others to formulate policies and procedures as it related to Animal Care Maintenance.
Knowledge and ability to maintain inbred and outbred stocks and strains of mice.
Knowledge of rodent genetics, breeding schemes and nomenclature.
