Overview: Responsible for HCL husbandry activities required for the proper care and maintenance of the animal care and use program for client's site in Atlanta, GA.
Description of Duties:
Follow all applicable biosafety and biosecurity policies set forth by the client's agency for high containment areas
Provide husbandry duties for animals housed in high containment areas (ABSL 3/4)
Receive, examine, transfer, identify, and properly house incoming animal shipments according to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
Provide food and water to animals following SOPs or approved protocols
Perform daily animal health surveillance checks and report any abnormal conditions of either the animals or the animal room environment to supervisory staff
Perform routine animal husbandry for small animal species and livestock; Livestock duties include cleaning and maintenance of stalls, paddocks, and pastures
Ensure animals receive adequate environmental enrichment as directed
Assist with the restraint and manipulation of various animal species
Understand and follow SOPs, safety procedures, and quality assurance guidelines for animal care at all levels of biohazard containment
Maintain a daily animal census in assigned animal rooms
Prepare and submit records, charts, logs, cage cards, and inventories as required by SOPs
Sanitize and decontaminate all areas of the facility as directed such as animal rooms, facility common areas, hallways and procedure rooms
Dispose of waste from the facility following appropriate SOPs
Maintain and repair animal caging and support equipment
Assist with receipt, stocking and maintenance of all supply inventories
Dispose of animal carcasses following SOPs
Maintain clean and organized work and personal areas
Assist cagewash personnel as needed
Work flexible hours to include weekend and holidays to ensure all animal care requirements are met daily
Report any abnormal conditions of the animal facility or immediate vicinity to supervisory staff
Perform other duties under supervision, as assigned
Requirements:
Must have a high school diploma or equivalent
Must be able to lift 50lbs
Must attain certification by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science as an Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) within 1 year of obtaining the position
Must have at least 6 months of experience working as an animal caretaker
Complete an intensive background investigation through the National Agency Check and Inquiries (ANACI) and pass a security risk assessment through the FBI and Criminal Justice Information Services Division
