This Civil Service position is responsible for assisting with the development and implementation of a standardized environmental surveillance program in Research Animal Resources (RAR). The primary functions of this position are to collect and or process daily/monthly/yearly sampling of various environmental items to be in compliance with The Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals and to uphold AAALAC (Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care International).
Work is performed under general supervision and reports to the Training and Compliance Lead. Progress and outcomes are frequently observed/reviewed.
The schedule for this position is 7:00am to 3:30pm
Job Details: 40% Conducts and maintains environmental surveillance and monitoring/ sampling schedule and ensures completion and data acquisition. This includes but is not limited to the following: • Water sampling • HVAC (humidity/temperature/pressures) • Light cycles (time on/off as well as lux emission) • Autoclave (biologics, chemical) • Physical sanitation practices (cleaning of cages, rooms, etc...) Surveillance to be completed by various methods or by sending samples out for processing. Must ensure receipt of information after testing. Able to interpret and respond appropriately to test results that do not meet specifications.
20% Maintain/calibrate equipment or contact companies to perform this calibration to ensure scheduling consistency. Equipment includes centrifuges, vaporizers, monitoring equipment, scales and various other items as assigned.
20% Performs periodic facility audits to ensure compliance with daily checks, animal cage change outs, etc. to meet standards of the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals. Helps develop SOP’s for process management of testing/sampling/monitoring. Continual review of industry best practices and following updates to regulatory documents.
10% Maintains spreadsheets of results and informs supervisor of those results that have come back out of range. Ensures retesting of areas and informs appropriate leaders and managers to ensure either non-use of equipment or retesting results until results come back in range.
10% Duties as assigned to ensure facility compliance
Physical and Environmental Requirements: • Exposure to animal allergens with enrollment in the Hearing conservation program, Respiratory Protection Program and Research Occupational Health Program (ROHP) with various requirements specific to each species housed in various facilities (rabies, measles, influenza, TB screening, etc…) • Proof of current tetanus vaccine must be provided before starting employment • The applicant must be able to be on their feet for a number of hours during the day and to travel to various facilities around both the Minneapolis and St. Paul campuses to complete testing or sampling • Employees will be required to wear Powered Air Purifying Respirators or N95 mask in animal areas when required

Preferred Qualifications: • Experience with quality assurance in a research/clinical setting • Experience with SOP (Standard Operating Procedures) writing • Experience with GLP studies
