Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, located on the North Shore of Long Island, is seeking a temporary Lab Aide in the Laboratory Animal Resources department for the summer. The position is responsible for providing care for research animals such as mice, rats and frogs in an AAALAC accredited facility, assists in the operation and administration of the Laboratory’s animal facility.
Position Responsibilities
• Monitors controls that regulate temperature and humidity of animals’ quarters. • Sprays disinfectants and mops floors and walls. • Washes and sterilizes cages and other materials. • Prepares, cleans, and maintains equipment for daily use. • Performs cage washer and autoclave quality assurance. • Assists in maintaining a sanitary environment throughout the animal facility. • Provides pre and post-operative care to animals, maintains animal health records, and assists in the performance of gross rodent necropsies. • Provides general animal nursing and laboratory assistance to scientific staff and the animal Facility Manager. • Feeds, waters, and cares for research animals at the animal care facility according to schedules.
Position Requirements
Education: High School or equivalent
Experience: Experience working with or around laboratory animals is preferred.
Physical: Must be able to lift and carry fifty pounds. This position requires standing most of the day.
Environmental: Must feel comfortable working around laboratory animals and in areas with elevated environmental noise levels.
Skills: Well organized, detail oriented, and adaptable to changes, ability to understand and follow detailed oral and written instructions. Ability to read and write in order to maintain records, read instructions, labels, etc. Other requirements: Must have a valid driver’s license; use of personal vehicle required.
