Position Description:
The Research Animal Management Branch (RAMB), Division of Intramural Research (DIR), Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), National Institutes of Health (NIH), Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) in Bethesda, Maryland is seeking a skilled and motivated Staff Scientist (Veterinarian) to support the Rodent Program within RAMB. RAMB provides animal research support services to NICHD investigators and represents the interests of the NICHD on all aspects of animal research.

The Staff Scientist will provide clinical and preventive care to rodent research animals housed in NICHD operated animal facilities. The Staff Scientist will also provide veterinary support to the NICHD Aquatics Program in the absence of the Aquatics Facility Veterinarian. The incumbent will consult with rodent researchers and research staff on veterinary care, animal-related issues and regulatory issues. They will manage the rodent animal program, facility, equipment and other required resources to provide animal care and research support. The incumbent will participate in protocol review, semiannual inspections, rodent program reviews, policy revisions and post approval monitoring. The Staff Scientist will provide oversight and support to rodent program contract staff including supervisors, veterinary technicians and animal husbandry staff. The incumbent should have strong clinical and diagnostic skills as well as experience in rodent research support. Aquatic research support experience is an asset. Another important aspect will be to develop and implement standard operating procedures (SOPs), as needed, for the rodent laboratory animal facilities and develop animal care policy and procedure to meet program objectives. This position is vital to ensuring regulatory compliance with pertinent federal, state, and local legislation and NIH specific policies, guidelines as well as maintaining Advancement for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care (AAALAC) standards of care. Finally, the incumbent must participate in the RAMB veterinary on-call rotation.

Qualifications:
1) The desired candidate will have a D.V.M. or V.M.D. degree from a college/school of veterinary medicine that is accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association or have a certificate issued by the American Veterinary Association’s Education Commission for Foreign Graduates (ECFVG)
2) License to practice veterinary medicine in at least one U.S. state
3) Have accreditation by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) National Veterinary Accreditation Program, Category II or have the ability to obtain accreditation with 8 months of hire
4) 3 years of experience as a veterinarian in the field of laboratory animal medicine or completion of a training program in laboratory animal medicine with eligibility for ACLAM board certification
5) ACLAM board certification is considered an asset
6) Aquatic animal experience is considered an asset
