The genetically modified rodent colony specialist will be responsible for tailoring the supply of various animal models to the demand for these animals from the scientific investigators at UCSF's Institute for Neurodegenerative Diseases. This position will be central to the proper and efficient operation of the genetically modified animal models core and the management of the breeding colony at the animal facility of the UCSF Institute for Neurodegenerative Diseases located in Southeast San Francisco. This person will advise a group of animal care technicians in maintaining and developing >100 strains of genetically modified mice and rats, providing broad colony management services. Broadly speaking, the incumbent will be responsible for optimizing colony size to experimental demands, responding to specific questions regarding genotypes, observed phenotypes, breeding schemes, genetic fidelity, fertility concerns, and documenting all activities in our custom-built electronic database, Climb. Integral to this position is the utilization of expertise in rodent reproductive biology and colony management to ensure genetic fidelity, minimization of genetic drift, quality control of genetically modified animals, and optimization breeding efficiency through determination of optimal breeding schemes to achieve our goals of production with the least waste and space requirements.

The person in this position must have a proven track-record with working with genetically modified animals, nomenclature, maintaining animal colonies, leading others in a research environment, and must have experience in working with laboratory animals and demonstrated ability to understand all the pertinent rules and regulations that come with this work.

The UCSF Institute for Neurodegenerative Diseases is entirely dedicated to research on neurodegenerative diseases such as multiple systems atrophy, chronic traumatic encephalopathy, and Alzheimer's. Its animal facility houses one of the largest colony of animals involved in prion disease research in the world. It is also one of the largest transgenic facilities dedicated to a single group of diseases. It produces over 10,000 transgenic animals per year carrying diverse modifications of a single gene or multiple genes at once. Please note: The compensation ranges listed online for roles not covered by a bargaining unit agreement are very wide, however a job offer will typically fall in the range of 80% - 120% of the established mid-point. An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.

For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.
