Position Summary

The Division of Nephrology seeks a Technician B to assist in executing the aims of funded grants and contracts. The work performed will support genetic investigations of kidney diseases in humans and animal models. The research will have direct relevance to clinical medicine, particularly to the pathophysiology of renal disease in humans. It is expected that this position will provide substantial experience for individuals interested in a career in medicine or biomedical research. In the long term, this position is expected to provide the technician with substantial experience in state-of-the-art approaches in molecular genetics.

Responsibilities

• Conduct standard molecular, genetic and immunological analysis experiments designed to resolve the genetic basis of kidney disease in human and murine models. 
• Prepare genomic DNA from human blood or mouse tissue for genotyping.
• Perform expression studies using Northern analysis, protein gels with Western blotting and quantitative PCR analyses, ELISA, flow cytometry as well as experiments requiring cell culture.
• Analyze DNA and RNA sequence data, and gain exposure to analysis and validation of Next-Gen sequencing data.
• Responsible for animal husbandry tasks associated with the genetic studies.
• Responsible for setting up matings, weaning pups, tail biopsy, euthanasia and observations on all animals for the development of phenotypes.
• Perform data entry and handling all paper work required for the animal facility.
• Perform additional related duties as assigned.
  
  

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in chemistry, biology or physics or related science or equivalent combination of education, training and experience
• At least 3 months previous laboratory experience preferably with some training either in molecular biological techniques or previous experience handling rodents in the laboratory setting
• Must be a team player and be willing to work with human blood, mouse tissue and radionucleotides
  
  

Preferred Qualifications

• Computer skills, especially with Macintosh and Windows computers

Other Requirements

• The candidate selected for this position is required to undergo a drug screening test prior to a final offer of employment being made.
