Budgeted Salary Range: Initial placement will be between $24.88 – $27.12/Hour, commensurate with educational background and relevant working experience.
Under general supervision, provides technical assistance in the Necropsy Section including; animal handling, necropsy, processing samples collected from animal necropsies, tissue trimming and preparing fixed tissues for embedding with adherence to established protocols, providing high level technical skills, computer entry and laboratory maintenance for necropsy facilities. Also provides assistance in Shipping/Receiving and Storeroom and customer service to all clients of the CAHFS.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required:
Bachelor of Science degree in Animal Science or Registered Veterinary Technician or/and equivalent combination of education and applied experience in technical aspects of necropsy including euthanasia, tissue/specimen collection, identification of normal versus abnormal anatomy and sterile techniques.
Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with a wide variety of clients, co-workers, individuals from other University units and government/outside agencies both in person, in writing and on the phone.
Knowledge of mammalian and avian anatomy and animal diseases and skills to assist with preparation of avian and mammalian necropsy.
Organizational skills to prioritize workload, meet multiple deadlines and adapt to changing workload requirements and priorities with skills to give careful attention to detail, including proper identification, labeling and completing documents related to received animals, specimens, and/or supplies.
General knowledge of and skills in veterinary/medical laboratory diagnostic specimen handling and processing including knowledge in tissue trimming with skills to grossly identify fixed tissues.
Knowledge and skills to interview clients to obtain clinical histories of animals and to maintain confidentiality of client information.
Computer skills to rapidly and accurately perform data entry and retrieval of data, and to utilize software programs such as StarLIMS, Word, and Excel.
Preferred:
Experience working in a veterinary diagnostic laboratory.
Quality system experience with the ability to understand and implement quality system requirements related to this position. Skills to comply with requirements and report potential or realized quality problems according to standard operating procedures.
Laboratory animal care experience.
Knowledge of and skills to follow laboratory/University safety protocols, to include appropriate handling/disposal of waste solvents and biohazardous materials/infectious wastes, bio-containment of highly contagious infectious agents of foreign animal disease.
