DVM with experience in the care of laboratory animals.
Teaching/training experience, with demonstrated excellent verbal, written, and technical writing communication skills, as well as the ability to use computer programs applicable to the position.
Training or experience in the preparation of educational or training materials related to veterinary science, animal care, and regulatory committees.
Ability to write and edit documents targeted at different audiences within the laboratory animal science community and be an effective advocate for excellent animal care as well as excellent science.
Minimum of two years of experience in a fast-paced office environment.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and ability to format documentation for email, web, and social media platforms.
Ability to work well under multiple deadlines and with constant interruptions.
Must have initiative and good judgment, be able to assume responsibility, work independently without close supervision, and be a proactive problem-solver with creative abilities to get tasks done, sometimes on very tight schedules.
Must have strong interpersonal skills to work with all staff, AALAS members, other affiliated professional groups, and the public.
Ability to interact with staff and members effectively and to handle conflict with composure and professionalism.
Must be able to read, write, and understand directions.
Preferred Requirements
PhD in biology, life, or animal science.
Knowledge of website development and HTML coding.
Experience/training in life science research.
Experience in providing guidance in curriculum and courseware design and development.
Previous experience managing or directing a laboratory animal facility.
Essential Functions & Responsibilities
Reports directly to the Executive Director, who provides the delegated authority to accomplish the BOT-approved programs, which fall within the responsibility of the Dir. of Prof. Development and Education.
Reviews and assists in the development of educational materials for use by AALAS members and those working in the field of laboratory animal science.
Provides advice and recommendations from a professional and educational perspective to the Executive Director, AALAS Leadership, and designated AALAS standing and ad hoc committees.
Works cooperatively with all committees, boards, and staff charged with the responsibilities of implementing, coordinating, and/or providing educational materials, including print, digital, and online materials.
Recommends the systems necessary to provide support for program implementation.
Serves as Staff Liaison to committees as assigned by the Executive Director.
Ensures adequate budget and staffing to meet the requirements for implementation of new and existing programs.
Establishes tasks to meet the goals and objectives of the department.
Monitors on a continuous basis the effectiveness and viability of all educational programs, activities, and materials.
Maintains relationships with educational organizations, associations, and other professionals with interests directly relating to AALAS goals and activities.
Evaluates ESA staff member’s performance on an annual basis and as needed during the year.

AALAS is a non-smoking office environment. The employee must be able to remain in a stationary position for over 75% of the time, as the duties of this job are performed at a computer and require prolonged periods of sitting. The employee is required to operate a computer and other office equipment. The employee must be able to use a computer and communicate by phone, email, and in person. The employee may occasionally need to lift, carry, move, or position boxes or other objects weighing up to 25 pounds.
The duties of this job could require the ability to travel 1-5 times per year.
