Job Summary: | The Research Program Director will report to the Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Education in the School of Veterinary Medicine (SVM). The main job of the Research Program Director will be to provide executive oversight (i.e., supervises and mentors ARC leadership team) and strategic planning for the School of Veterinary Medicine's Animal Resources Center (ARC) located at the Charmany Instructional Facility. The goal of the ARC is to provide appropriate animal care that facilitates animal research in compliance with federal and university regulations, while maintaining a positive work environment and remaining within budgetary constraints. The ARC is a large complex research and instructional animal facility housing a wide variety of species (including but not limited to cows, goats, sheep, mice, rats, pigs, ponies, calves, gerbils, rabbits, cats, dogs, ground squirrels, parrots, snakes, iguanas, colonies of transgenic mice and rats, and varied wildlife). The ARC consists of five separate animal holding facilities accredited by the Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care International (AAALAC). These facilities are located in West Madison, and downtown campus. All animal care is provided in accordance with SOP's (Standard Operating Procedures), "Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals", and research/instructional protocols. |
Responsibilities: | Provides executive oversight and strategic planning for a center or program and may direct the research activities undertaken by multiple aligned programs. Allocates resources, secures funding, and supervises staff to ensure program strategies and activities align with the institutional mission. - 30% Develops, directs, and evaluates research program strategic planning initiatives and establishes objectives to ensure appropriate use of financial, administrative, and staffing resources in alignment with the strategic plan
- 20% Develops, implements, directs, and evaluates research program operating policies and procedures to comply with regulations, institutional policies, and unit objectives
- 20% Serves as the unit liaison and key spokesperson to internal and external stakeholder groups providing organizational information and representing the interests of the research program
- 5% Develops and audits research program budget(s)
- 5% Exercises supervisory authority, including hiring, transferring, suspending, promoting, managing conduct and performance, discharging, assigning, rewarding, disciplining, and/or approving hours worked of at least 2.0 full-time equivalent (FTE) employees
- 20% The Research Program Director will have Select Agent Program Clearance, and supervise the operation of Select Agent facilities, and BSL2 facilities

Tasks: | - Facility Manager for Charmany Instructional Facility
- Manage Avidity Watchdog (Environmental Monitoring System)
- Work with the ARC billing program (Animal Resource Management)
- Provide monthly billing summary reports to SVM Business Services Office for per diem & animal purchase chargeback
- After-hours/weekend/holiday on call for emergencies
- AAALAC Contact person for SVM & submit AAALAC Annual Report
- Property Control contact for Animal Resource Center
- Provide animal numbers to PIs and RARC for annual USDA report
- Help prepare AAALAC Program Description (every 3 years)
- Represent ARC at the monthly IACUC meeting
- Title IX Responsible Employee, and Campus Security Authorities (CSA)
- Work with SVM Facility Manager, and UWPD Security on facilities access control
- Manage CIF alarm system for building mechanicals
- Maintain Autoclaves, cage washers, and equipment used for large animal care
- Prepare FY CORs, and purchase orders
