JOB SUMMARY
Under the general supervision of the Program Manager and Head Trainer, the incumbent will perform animal care and husbandry tasks in support of several projects related to metabolism and physiology of Atlantic bottlenose dolphins, Hawaiian monk seals, sea otters, and other pinniped species. Research tasks will include (but are not limited to): metabolic data collection using an open-flow respirometry system, heat flow data collection measurements, heart rate data collection measurements, morphometric measurements, venipuncture procedures and subsequent analysis of blood chemistries. Incumbent will be expected to manage and ensure the completion of all aspects of animal care and behavioral conditioning, facility maintenance, and volunteer staff management, and general administrative duties. Incumbent will also be expected to use SCUBA for the weekly maintenance and inspection of the animal habitats.
APPOINTMENT INFORMATION
Budgeted Salary: $26.78 - $28.56/hour. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience. JOB DUTIES
60% - Animal Training, Husbandry, and Research
Performs all animal and volunteer management tasks in the absence of the Program Manager and Head Trainer.
Performs research tasks that include (but are not limited to): metabolic data collection using an open-flow respirometry system, heat flow measurements, heart rate measurements, and body mass measurements.
Reports all health concerns to campus veterinarian and photo-documents and uploads to animal database.
Applies behavioral conditioning techniques for purposes of animal separations, mental and physical fitness, research behaviors, and implementation of novel behaviors.
15% - Administrative Duties
Maintains animal records and personnel files.
Reviews and reports quantities of animal consumables and laboratory supplies.
Maintains and updates standard operating procedures manual and work manual.
Assists with legally-mandated paperwork and ensure adherence to regulations.
10% - Facilities Support
Manages and guarantees completion of all facility sanitation and orderliness protocols.
Monitors and reports inventory of supplies.
With the help of the facilities personnel, inspects and repairs seawater pipes, fences, fiberglass posts, shade structures, animal habitats, and related life support systems.
Uses a forklift to move animals and/or animal consumables around effectively.
10% - Volunteer Supervision
Mentors volunteer staff and provides constructive feedback on their progress.
Makes recommendations for improved staff cohesion, diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Stays current with animal training methodologies and resources and passes those on to volunteer staff members.
5% - Education and Outreach
Interfaces with Seymour Marine Discovery Center and helps run Ocean Explorer's Summer Camp.
Assists in educational demonstrations for K-12, college, and general public demonstrations.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Graduation from high school, completion of training equivalent to the Laboratory Animal Technician certification of the AALAS, and two years of animal care experience; or high school graduation and three years of animal care experience in the care of animal species; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Extensive experience (minimum of 7 years) with animal husbandry and behavioral conditioning techniques with exotic animal species (experience with marine mammal species highly recommended).
Prior experience managing and directing other staff members (including volunteer staff) with regard to animal care and training in a research and educational setting.
Strong organizational and time management skills.
Ability to exercise flexibility, initiative, good judgement, and discretion.
Strong problem-solving abilities.
Thorough knowledge and experience in both operant and classical conditioning as they relate to behavioral conditioning with animals.
Knowledge of and ability to apply educational techniques.
Competence in all research behaviors as applied with the animals on the Marine Mammal Physiology Project.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Experience working with the Marine Mammal Physiology Project at Long Marine Laboratory.
Demonstrated experience with open-flow respirometry, heart rate measurements, and heat flow.
Experience managing life support systems including (but not limited to): performing backflushes of sand filters, monitoring water chemistries, mending nets, utilizing power tools, and ability to operate and maintain robust underwater scrubbers.
Knowledge of fiberglass and ability to make gelcoat repairs.
Experience with and willingness to participate in Ocean Explorer's Summer Camp.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
Selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment criminal history background check.
Scientific SCUBA Dive Certification or ability to obtain shortly after employment. Letter of reciprocity from approved AAUS institution will suffice under approval from UCSC Diving Safety Officer.
In accordance with AAUS requirements to maintain active Scientific SCUBA dive certification, must possess active CPR/First Aid/AED certification or be able to obtain within 60 days from hire date.
Forklift certification or ability to obtain within 60 days of employment.
Must possess a valid license to drive in the state of California.
Ability to perform essential physical job functions.
Ability to perform work in a rugged physical environment and inclement weather with challenging infrastructure requirements.
The ability to ascend/descend ladders with or without accommodation.
Ability to safely perform the physical requirements necessary to move light to moderate objects up to 60 lbs., with or without accomodation.
