This position is responsible for the development and implementation of a formalized training program for BRL animal care staff and UIC investigative staff that work with animals. The position also coordinates regularly scheduled post-approval monitoring to ensure that procedures are conducted in compliance with approved protocols and institutional policies. The position works collaboratively with veterinary staff, animal care staff, and research staff.
Essential Responsibilities
Training of BRL Animal Care Staff
Develop, revise and implement standard operating procedures (SOPs) related to all facets of the BRL operations including animal care and the use of specialized equipment.
Provide new employee orientation and SOP training to animal care staff.
Assess the competency of animal care staff through continued observation of adherence to the SOPs specific to individual training tasks.
Prepare reports, propose recommendations, and communicate concerns to the Associate Director and Assistant Director of Animal Care.
Document training of BRL animal care staff.
Assist with the administration and implementation of the continuing education program for animal care staff and AALAS certification classes.
Training of UIC Investigative Staff
Manage and assist with training courses provided to UIC investigative staff.
Provide training on specific animal techniques on a case-by-case basis.
Provide opportunities for continuing education to investigative staff.
Serve as a source to guide, train and advise lower-level researchers, technicians and students on techniques, methods, and procedures.
Post-Approval Monitoring
Conduct internal auditing procedures as part of the post-approval monitoring program.
Prepare reports on audit/monitoring findings and communicate concerns with senior veterinary staff.
Serve as a compliance resource to the research community.
BRL Research Support
Assist with study design, statistical analysis, and mentorship of BRL postdoctoral training research projects.
Contribute material, prepare results and assist in the writing of research findings for publications, papers, presentations, grants, and other documents for publication and research compliance.
Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in science or related field required.
A minimum of 3 years related research experience.
A minimum of 3 years related experience working with animals in a research setting.
Preferred Qualifications
Master’s or PhD degree in science preferred.
Knowledge of regulations and guidelines pertaining to the use of laboratory animals.
Proficient in specific laboratory animal research techniques.
Experience with providing instruction and training.
Excellent written and oral communication skills.
