Princeton University’s Nonhuman Primate Research Program (NRP) is seeking a full-time NHP clinical veterinarian for their expanding program. The primary purpose of this position is to provide veterinary clinical and surgical support for macaques and marmosets used in neuroscience under the general direction of the NRP Attending Veterinarian.
This position provides primary clinical care of NHPs used for research and breeding at Princeton University, including general veterinary care, management of sick cases, surgical support, and oversight of welfare and behavior. The position requires strong clinical, anesthesia and surgical veterinary skills, the ability to maintain clinical records and databases, computer literacy, strong organizational skills, and excellent interpersonal skills. The position requires close collaboration with the research labs, and may offer research opportunities if the candidate so desires.
Responsibilities
Veterinary Care & Husbandry - Provide each individual NHP veterinary care that ensures its health and wellbeing. - Performance of veterinary clinical rounds. - Maintain current knowledge of standards of veterinary care with regards to NHP medicine and surgery, particularly in relation to the relevant research models being utilized at the University. - Assist with overseeing healthcare monitoring, preventive medicine, and environmental enrichment for NHP research colony. - The NRP AV and the NRP Clinical Veterinarian are responsible for veterinary care during normal business hours. The NRP AV and NRP CV will split on-call after hours duties with other veterinary members of the LAR veterinary team.
Behavior & Enrichment - Assist with the management and implementation of NHP Enrichment Plan. - Assist with oversight of social housing enrichment program, under management of the NRP AV Welfare & Behavior Manager.
Regulatory Assist NRP AV: - Provide support for activities and attend meetings of the IACUC, including protocol review, program review and facility inspections. - Ensure program is in compliance with all applicable regulations, guidelines, and standards that relate to animal care and use (e.g., USDA, OLAW, AAALAC). - Participate in inspections by USDA and site visits by AAALAC.
Training - Support and participate in training program to provide training to veterinary care staff, animal care staff, and researchers. - Support and participate in training program to develop and deliver training for the PIs, lab staff, researchers and members of the IACUC with respect to NHP care, procedures, and protocols. - Assist in writing, reviewing, and revising NHP veterinary, husbandry, environmental enrichment, surgery and compliance SOPs as appropriate.
Research Support - Assist NRP AV with oversight of water and food restriction of NHPs in accordance with institutional policies, SOPs, and approved IACUC protocols. - Assist NRP AV perform pre, peri, and post-operative support for all NHP models, including but not limited to preop planning, surgery, anesthesia, and post-operative care. - Participate in providing consultation, collaboration, advice, and training as needed during protocol development.
Other - Assist NRP AV and University programmatic needs in other duties as assigned and appropriate.
Qualifications
Essential Qualifications:
- Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine from a College of Veterinary Medicine that is accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association or has a certificate issued by the American Veterinary Medical Association’s Education Commission for Foreign Veterinary Graduates), and a license to practice veterinary medicine in at least one state. - The ability to obtain a license to practice in the state of New Jersey and national USDA accreditation. - A minimum of two (2) years of clinical, surgical, and anesthesia experience with laboratory nonhuman primates and/or completion of an accredited laboratory animal medicine residency. - Excellent and working knowledge of standards, regulations, policies and guidelines associated with performing research using NHP including the Animal Welfare Act and Regulations, the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, and Public Health Services Policy on Humane Care and Use of Laboratory Animals. - Excellent written and oral communication skills. - Excellent interpersonal skills. - Proficiency in use of computers including use of word processing, spreadsheets, database software and internet usage. - Demonstrated capacity to work well independently and in collaboration with veterinary care and research staff. - Strong preference will be given to candidates with a strong background in nonhuman primate clinical and surgical medicine, particularly those with experience with NHPs used in neuroscience. - Ability to work after-hours, nights, weekends, and emergency shifts as needed to perform responsibilities.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Board certification in Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM). - Experience interacting with regulatory agencies during inspection, site visit, or audit including USDA, AAALAC, and OLAW - Evidence of commitment to continuing education and continuous improvement of clinical, surgical, or anesthesia skill sets - Research surgical and imaging (MRI, CT) experience. - Teaching experience both in a classroom setting and with individuals. - Supervisory experience. - Management of NHP colonies used in neuroscience research, particularly management of cranial implants.
