Job Summary: | The Wisconsin National Primate Research Center (WNPRC) is seeking two highly motivated, self-starting Research Specialists for the laboratory of Dr. Ei Terasawa who has a long-standing and impactful neuroscience research focus. Dr. Terasawa specializes in studying cell-molecular mechanisms of neurons in nonhuman primates (NHPs). Successful applicants for these positions will participate actively in the research and will be responsible for following approved animal, biosafety, and radio-imaging protocols.

Responsibilities: | Develops, designs, and conducts one or more research projects and organizes daily operation of projects and specialized research areas to ensure work meets established objectives under moderate supervision. - 50% Conducts research experiments according to established research protocols with moderate impact to the project(s). Collects data and monitors test results
- 15% Operates, cleans, and maintains organization of research equipment and research area. Tracks inventory levels and places replenishment orders
- 15% Reviews, analyzes, and interprets data and/or documents results for presentations and/or reporting to internal and external audiences
- 5% Participates in the development, interpretation, and implementation of research methodology and materials
- 10% Provides operational guidance on day-to-day activities of unit or program staff and/or student workers
- 5% Performs literature reviews and writes reports

Education: | Required Bachelor's Degree BS/BA in a biological science or related field required. Advanced degree holders are encouraged to apply. |
Qualifications: | This position requires a minimum of 1 year of previous, related laboratory experience, including previous experience working with laboratory animals in a research setting; relevant educational experience and coursework may be accepted. Experience in the handling and manipulation of NHPs, such as rhesus macaques, is strongly preferred. Must be able to work with animals in vivo as part of a team, as well as with cell cultures in vitro.
Applicants should be detail-oriented, well-organized, self-motivated, and have excellent interpersonal skills. Excellent verbal and written skills and proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint are required. Prior experience with web-based databases preferred. Must be able to work independently as well as part of a team. Candidates should understand research principles and regulations, and possess excellent problem-solving skills. |

Additional Information: | Applicant must be comfortable working with nonhuman primates, biological materials, and chemicals in a biomedical research setting, and with wearing various required personal protective equipment (PPE).
The applicant will be introduced to the standard procedures used for animal care and handling at the Primate Center and will be required to obtain UW animal care and handling certification from Research Animal Resources and Compliance, as well as radiation safety certification from the UW Safety Department. Additional relevant training may be required as needed.
-BL2+ and radiation certification will be acquired upon hire. -Must be TB negative. -Applicant will be required to have a measles titer within the first week of employment. Depending on the results of the blood test, applicant may need to be immunized. -Allergies to animals must be controlled by medication. -Must possess a valid driver's license that meets standards of UW Risk Management in order to operate WNPRC vehicles.
The WNPRC is one of seven federally supported National Primate Research Centers and the only one in the Midwest. WNPRC's mission is to increase the understanding of basic primate biology and to improve human health and quality of life through research. To accomplish this, the WNPRC helps discover treatments, preventions and cures for human disease; generates new knowledge of primate biology, from the molecular and whole animal levels to the understanding of primate ecosystems; facilitates research progress by providing expertise, resources and training to scientists worldwide; and collects primate information and disseminates to the research community and to the public.
