To Provide Veterinary Care and Support for NIMH Intermural Research Program 

Support shall include:

• Consistently provides timely clinical veterinary care to laboratory animals (rodents, NHPs, etc.) used within the NIMH Intramural Research Program and as assigned.
• Participates as required in the provision of emergency veterinary care for animals within the NIMH program or other programs as assigned.
• Effectively evaluates veterinary and husbandry practices and establishes or modifies procedures required to maintain high standards of animal care for constantly fluctuating colonies and programmatic requirements.
• Provides consistent and authoritative veterinary expertise to the Institute’s Animal Care and Use Committee (ACUC) or other Institute or Campus organizations.
• Consistently provides emergency veterinary coverage and support for the IRP of the NIMH.
• Provides expert guidance in the areas of veterinary medical care and laboratory animal care/husbandry to facilitate protocol development and laboratory animal research. Recommends the selection of appropriate animal models, animal physiology, nutrition, breeding, genetics, diseases, anesthesia, manipulative techniques, and existing environmental conditions.
• Serve as a consultant to the Institute’s investigators who utilize unique strains of transgenic and congenic animals.
• Provide expertise in reproductive physiology, husbandry, veterinary care, and genetics of laboratory animals.
• The incumbent develops and provides research training for the NIMH investigators and technicians on the proper animal manipulation and handling of animals to ensure their humane treatment.
• Consistently communicates and interacts with others (i.e., veterinarians, supervisors, investigators, peers, and others) promptly using courtesy, discretion, and judgment.
• Consistently demonstrates the ability to convey information to others in an effective manner.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION:

Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree or equivalent required. Must have a license to practice veterinary medicine in at least one (1) state. Minimum three (3) years’ experience required in clinical laboratory animal medicine. Completion of a residency program in laboratory animal medicine and certification as a Diplomate of the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM) is preferred.

Must have knowledge of laboratory animal technician duties and training. Must possess excellent knowledge of Federal, State, and local regulations governing Animal Care/Animal facilities.

Must be a legal resident of the United States.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:

Demonstrated record of work experience within an animal care facility, or within the field of laboratory animal science.

Demonstrated record of successful development, implementation and maintenance of enrichment and training programs.

Demonstrated ability to handle multiple tasks in an organized manner with minimal supervision. Good communication and interpersonal skills. Working knowledge of Microsoft’s Office (Word, Excel, etc.) required
