The Center for Animal Resources and Education (CARE) at Cornell University is a service and a resource to the AAALAC International -accredited Cornell research and teaching community. CARE provides high quality animal care and veterinary services, and advises and educates researchers, staff and students on animal experimentation issues while promoting best practices for the responsible use of animals. These actions result in quality science merging with animal welfare.

What We are Looking For:

CARE is in search of an experienced ACLAM board certified or eligible Veterinarian to provide clinical veterinary care and oversight to a large and diverse animal care and use program. The ideal candidate will also advise on research involving animals; perform collaborative and/or independent research projects; participate in IACUC functions; assist with maintaining accreditation of Cornell's animal care and use program; and provide instruction and training to animal users, veterinary and husbandry staff, and residents in the lab animal medicine program.

What You Will Do:

Provide health care, including physical examinations, vaccinations, treatment of illnesses, and surgeries to research animals. Conduct routine clinical rounds; diagnose, treat and monitor the progress of sick animals (research animals including, but not limited to, rodents, rabbits, dogs, cats, cows, pigs, sheep, poultry, horses, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and fish). Maintain a program of adequate veterinary care including guidance and direction, monitoring and assessment of animal well-being in the areas of animal procurement and transportation, preventative medicine (including quarantine, animal biosecurity, and surveillance), pain and distress, euthanasia.

Advise on research involving animals. Collaborate with faculty on animal research projects including clinical research, design and performance of experiments using animals, as well as methods and techniques either proposed or in use. Perform independent research depending on funding opportunities.

Provide instruction to animal husbandry and research staff regarding care and treatment of a wide range of health conditions and health monitoring procedures. Assist with IACUC-mandated training programs, mentor veterinary students during rotations and externships with CARE. Assist in teaching/mentoring of students and residents in the Laboratory Animal Medicine Residency training program.

Review IACUC protocols and serve as an alternate to the Attending Veterinarian in the conduct of semiannual IACUC inspections and other IACUC responsibilities. Assist in the review of all animal use protocols and institutional programs involving animals in research, testing and teaching.

Maintain accreditation for Cornell's animal program. Participate in, review and approve the planning, design and approval of any construction or renovation involving animal facilities and facility inspections. Conduct routine animal facility rounds.

Required Qualifications

• DVM, VMD, or equivalent degree from an AVMA accredited veterinary school, or certification of veterinary training through programs such as ECFVG and PAVE with laboratory animal medicine and surgery experience and training.
• Three to five years' experience with a wide variety of laboratory animals including (transgenic) mice, other rodents, cats, dogs, cows, pigs, sheep, poultry, horses, birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish.
• Must have good working knowledge of AWA&R (Animal Welfare Act & Regulations), PHS (Public Health Service) policy, The Guide to Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, The Guide for the Care and Use of Agricultural Animals in Agricultural Research and Teaching, state regulations and other applicable laws, regulations and guidelines governing laboratory (including agricultural) animal care and use.
• Desire to teach/instruct/conduct research.
• Superior verbal/written communication skills.
• Service-oriented. Self-motivated.
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
• Ability to take initiative, follow directives, motivate others, and contribute to a positive and diverse team environment.
• Licensure to practice veterinary medicine in at least one state.

Preferred Qualifications

• ACLAM board certified or eligible, or 5+ years of experience in clinical laboratory animal medicine.
• PhD, Master's degree or other similar advanced degree.
• Experience writing grant proposals and conducting research projects from proposal to final publication.
• Experience in the industry setting GLP (Good Laboratory Practice).
• ABSL2 and ABSL3 experience is a plus.
• Experience working in a gnotobiotic facility is a plus.
• Experience directly supervising staff is a plus.

The expected hiring range will be between $140,000-$150,000/annually.
