An exceptional and visionary leader is being sought to join the academic institution as the Director of the Translational Medicine Institute (TMI). The Director will guide the TMI in bridging the gap between scientific discovery and clinical application, bringing innovative therapies and medical breakthroughs to animal and human patients worldwide. The Director will shape the future of healthcare by leading a talented team of researchers, forging collaborations with industry partners, and driving the translation of cutting-edge research into tangible medical technologies.
The Director will build and cultivate the TMI research strategy, benefitting from the state-of-the-art facilities, cutting-edge technologies, and vibrant research community. The Director’s leadership skills will be instrumental in translating scientific discoveries into practical clinical applications, fostering an environment that encourages interdisciplinary collaboration and forward-thinking initiatives.
Translation and commercialization of research is a key objective of TMI activities. The Director will drive this critical process by fostering a culture of entrepreneurship and innovation within the institution. The director will work closely with research teams and technology transfer offices to identify promising discoveries and devise comprehensive plans for commercialization.
The Director will actively engage in securing research funding and facilitating research teams both within and external to the TMI through traditional federal and not-for-profit granting mechanisms, industry collaborations, and philanthropic support. The Director will ensure the continued growth and sustainability of the TMI through leadership that develops the TMI research portfolio to achieve the desired translational focus.
To excel in this role, candidates must possess a proven track record of visionary leadership, strategic thinking, and successful collaboration within the field of academic and/or industry research and translational medicine. As Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion is one of the College’s strategic pillars, it is essential that the Director have a solid understanding of these principles and have demonstrated applying them, as well as experience leading with an equity-centered mindset. Candidates must also demonstrate experience in building research strategies, fostering industry partnerships, and commercialization of scientific discoveries. The Director must exhibit exceptional communication and networking skills, the capacity to forge strategic alliances, the ability to attract philanthropic interest, and cultivate relationships with funding agencies and foundations.
This position is primarily in-office, with some flexibility for virtual meetings and occasional remote work
Reporting Structure The TMI Director will report to the Dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences (CVMBS) or the Dean’s designee.
The Director has an executive team at their discretion to assist with facilitating the functions of the TMI. Current positions include Associate Director of Continuing Education and Associate Director of Operations and Strategy. Additional Associate Director (AD) positions to complement the leadership team (for example AD of Research, AD of Business Development) and other organizational positions could be hired at the discretion of the Director.
CVMBS and the Department of Clinical Sciences are currently considering governance structures for faculty with primary assignments within an institute. The TMI Director will have the opportunity to provide mentorship and performance review for each active TMI faculty member to the relevant Department Head. Additionally, it is envisioned that the TMI director will have the authority to govern how programmatic space is allocated within the TMI facility based upon reasonable consideration of productive CSU academic space utilization in consultation with the Department Head, Program leaders, and Center directors.
The TMI Director is a full-time (12 vs. 9 months) administrative professional leadership position. The Director may request a faculty joint appointment in an appropriate college and academic department, as desired and eligible.
PhD/DVM/MD or equivalent o An MBA plus 5 years of relevant translational research/industry experience may substitute for the PhD/DVM/MD
Experience leading sizable (10 or more employees) academic or industry operations and professional staff
Experience managing multi-million dollar annual budget
Demonstrated success leading and growing diverse teams
Evidence of collegiality and collaborative skill set.
Demonstrated experience in research development.
Previous experience with the technology commercialization and the preclinical to clinical translation process, preferably in developing biological or medical devices for the treatment of diseases in animals, people, or both.
