Under supervision, performs veterinary and environmental diagnostic and research testing for the Laboratory of Comparative Pathology (LCP) which supports the Research Animal Resource Center (RARC) and the Genetically Modified Animal (GMA) Phenotyping Service.
Job Responsibilities
Receives requests, enters them in Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS), and processes samples according to laboratory protocol.
Organizes and performs clinical pathology testing to comply with the sample priority schedule to maximize testing efficiency and accuracy.
Monitors assay results and quality controls to verify adequate precision of methodology, reagents, and instrument functions; evaluates test reports for transcription errors.
Maintains and calibrates instruments daily to ensure their accurate and consistent operations and promote increased instrument life span.
Troubleshoots instrument and reagent problems to determine cause of malfunction or inaccurate test results.
Assists clinical staff laboratory with test submission requirements, methodology and results interpretation.
Tests cell-related components of blood samples to enumerate and identify their cellular components, including the microscopic evaluation of blood smears and the use of automated and manual counting techniques (Hematology).
Examines blood and body fluids for various components using automated instrumentation (Chemistry and Serology).
Processes blood and body fluids for microscopic examination by veterinary pathologists, including slide preparation and staining (Cytology).
Analyzes chemical and microscopic components of urine samples, using automated instrumentation and manual techniques (Urinalysis).
Identifies parasitic organisms in various animal sources, using sedimentation and flotation techniques and microscopic evaluation (Parasitology).
Isolates bacterial infectious agents from various samples using selective media and API strips, and verifies functionality of autoclaves (Microbiology).
Tests water for pH, conductivity, alkalinity, and chemical contents (Water Analysis).
Education
High School Diploma
Experience
Recent graduates with relevant training will also be considered.
Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology or equivalent preferred.
Bachelor of Science from an accredited college or university in biological sciences or an Associate's degree in Medical Technology considered.
Certification as a Medical Technologist (MT) (American Medical Technologists-AMT), Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) (ASCP), Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) (ASCP), Medical Laboratory Technologist (MLT) (Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science-CSMLS), or equivalent military certification preferred.
One -3 years of laboratory work experience preferred. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Willing to work with samples from laboratory animals such as mice, rats, rabbits, pigs, non-human primates and others.
Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
Excellent communication skills (both verbal and written).
