The CPSR is a full-service core that provides pathology support to Masonic Cancer Center members and non-members who use laboratory animals in their research. Our clientele is diverse and the research scope includes small and large animal models of cancer, infectious disease, metabolic disease, cardiovascular disease, inflammatory disease, as well as device and interventional research.
Core to our mission is the provision of the highest quality histology samples. These include frozen and paraffin-embedded samples and routine (H&E), special, and immunohistochemical (IHC) stains. Our IHC offerings are ever growing in response to researcher needs. This position is best suited for an individual who is committed to generating best-in-class histopathology samples, enthusiastic about generating new (and troubleshooting old) staining protocols, and excited to work with a team who shares that passion.
Job Description: The Histotechnologist will be responsible for processing all specimens received in the CPSR laboratory. The Histotechnologist will facilitate the receipt and processing of histology specimens (using various methodologies). The Histotechnologist will then prepare the slides for Pathologist review by cutting prepared blocks of tissue. Histotechnologists are then responsible for appropriately staining the slides whether with routine, special or immunohistochemical stains. Throughout this process the Histotechnologist is responsible for labeling, entering and tracking the progress of the specimen until it reaches the Pathologist for diagnosis. The position is also responsible for the maintenance of the histology area by maintaining inventory and supplies, cleaning and organizing of work stations, disposal of biological waste, adherence to all compliance and operational procedures.
Specific duties include: • Prepare human and animal tissues for processing, embedding, and sectioning (using both paraffin wax and frozen samples). • Performing routine, special, and immunohistochemical staining. • Determining appropriate handling and tissue processing for specimens and priorities on requested procedures. • Utilizing appropriate equipment with precision for all histological protocols. • Performing computer data entry, recall, and labeling. • Performing routine preventative maintenance, cleaning, and minor adjustments on all lab equipment. • Examining solutions for contamination, impurities, or instability. • Following procedures on all lab tests. • Examining microscopically all stained slides and controls to determine accuracy of the last test and make modifications to the procedures as needed. • Retrieving and stores specimens properly for long term storage. • Performing all procedures in a timely manner. • Answering laboratory phone properly and take information correctly. • Assisting in the ordering of laboratory supplies to maintain proper inventory. • Understand and use proper safety practices. • Performing other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications: • BA/BS degree or a combination of related education and work experience to equal at least four years.
Preferred Qualifications: • Certification in the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP).
