Position Summary
The Columbia Center for Translational Immunology at Columbia University Irving Medical Center (CUIMC) seeks a highly motivated technician to support research on T cell function in cancer and autoimmunity. The Technician A (Tech A) will assist laboratory members with experiments, order supplies, and maintain lab inventory. Responsibilities include work in techniques such as flow cytometry, cell culture, PCR, immunohistochemistry, and mice colony maintenance under close supervision. The technician may also perform independent experiments, collaborate with CUIMC departments, and process patient blood samples.
Responsibilities
Prepare and assist in experiments
Conduct simple experiments following written protocols
Order and maintain laboratory or clinical supplies
Maintain lab records
Collect and analyze blood samples from patients
Coordinate and communicate patient data
Operate and maintain lab equipment, including tissue culture hood, incubators, centrifuges, PCR, and fluorescent microscopy
Prepare and manage experiments
Maintain accurate records of samples, reagents, instrument tuning, and QC
Perform routine data processing
Assist with patients' data analysis and presentation
Contribute to assay development and optimization
Foster a culture of scientific excellence, integrity, efficiency, teamwork, continuous learning, and improvement
Perform other related duties as needed
Minimum Qualifications
Two years of college or a completed A.A. program with an emphasis on chemistry, biology, physics, or related science plus one year of related experience or equivalent in training and/or experience
Ability to work in a neat and orderly manner following safety regulations and standard clinical protocols
Strong record-keeping skills
Effective communication with patients, students, and faculty; previous basic science lab and patient interaction experience is valuable
Preferred Qualifications
College courses with an emphasis in chemistry, biology, medicine, or completion of an animal husbandry program
Pre-med background is advantageous
Prior clinical or lab experience during college is a plus
Familiarity with immunology, biology, or medical terminology and techniques
Knowledge of medical terminology and experience with interviewing techniques
Proficiency in laboratory safety
Experience with animal work
Other Requirements
The candidate selected for this position is required to undergo a drug screening test prior to a final offer of employment being made
Participation in the medical surveillance program
Position will involve work with laboratory animals
Contact with patients and/or human research subjects
Potential bloodborne pathogen exposure
Successful completion of applicable compliance and systems training requirements
